$16 million available for tribal clean energy projects

Grant applications are open exclusively for tribes and tribes’ contracted service providers for clean energy projects.

Commerce is accepting applications to support the planning, design, and construction of clean energy projects that promote tribal sovereignty, advance resiliency, and contribute to Washington’s decarbonization goals. These funds are exclusively available for federally recognized tribes and their contracted service providers.

Tribes are strongly encouraged to apply through this customized funding opportunity. The application window is ongoing through September 27, with the first review beginning at noon Pacific Time on March 29.

The following 2023-2025 budget appropriations will be included in this funding opportunity:

  • Solar Energy Retrofits for Public Buildings
  • Solar Plus Storage for Resilient Communities
  • Community Solar and Storage for Low-income Communities
  • Large Scale Solar Innovation
  • Dual Use Solar Pilots
  • Clean Energy Fund: Tribal Clean Energy, Federal Match, Grid Integration and Innovation
  • Clean Energy Siting and Permitting
  • Hard to Decarbonization Sectors

The Energy Programs in Communities unit will launch two more funding rounds this spring:

  1. Community Decarbonization Grants for projects advancing equity, resiliency and environmental justice. Applications for this program will open in mid-February and are expected to close in April.
  2. General Clean Energy Solicitation. More information on this round will be available soon; this solicitation is anticipated to open in the spring.

The three solicitations will be the primary opportunity to apply for these funds. The Energy Programs in Communities unit is not planning additional solicitations for individual programs.

Funding levels for each solicitation are approximate and may be adjusted. See the Request for Applications for more details.

How to apply

Applicants only need to submit one application per project to apply for grant funding, and they may submit applications for multiple projects. Commerce will evaluate each application across all potential programs and match projects to the relevant funding source(s).
