LIHEAP team supports cooling services to help keep communities safe

Publications manager and editor

Commerce’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) team has helped families keep the heat on for more than 40 years. This year, they helped folks stay cool through an increasingly hot summer, thanks to changes in federal programming.

LIHEAP is a federal program that Commerce administers. LIHEAP helped finance more than 4,000 air conditioning units across the state in its most recent program year, said LIHEAP Program Manager Brian Sarensen.

This was the first program year with cooling, Sarensen said. And although winter isn’t usually when folks are thinking about beating the heat, it’s actually the best time, he said. There’s more inventory, and prices are sometimes lower.

Open enrollment: Don’t confuse these dental plans

By PAYROLL and the HEALTH CARE AUTHORITY

PEBB logo

The two Delta Dental plans offered by the PEBB Program are often confused. Sometimes members intend to enroll in Uniform Dental Plan (UDP) but accidentally enroll in DeltaCare, or vice versa. During open enrollment, be careful to choose the dental plan you want.

  • DeltaCare (Group 3100) is a managed-care plan with a narrow network. You must choose a primary care dentist within the network or you will be assigned a primary care dentist. Your primary care dentist must give you a referral to see a specialist. This plan will not pay claims if you see a provider outside of the network.
  • Uniform Dental Plan (Group 3000) is a preferred-provider plan. You may choose and change any dental provider at any time, but you will usually have lower out-of-pocket costs if you see in-network providers.

New employees must be fully vaccinated

By Theresa Burkheimer

Although the emergency proclamation  has expired, the directive requires Commerce to verify that new employees are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have been granted exemptions and approved accommodations. If an exemption cannot be granted, the offer of employment will be rescinded.
