By LISA BROWN Commerce director
Good morning, colleagues. I am pleased to share with you that beginning today (Sept. 1), we are launching Phase 3 of our agency’s reorganization.
In this phase, we re-envision our agency’s leadership structure to respond to our continued growth, commitment to equity and modern hybrid model of operations.
Standing up the Executive Operations Team
Please join me in welcoming our new Executive Operations Team (EOT)!
- Kendrick Stewart, deputy director of organizational health
- Diane Klontz, deputy director of division and program alignment
- Martin McMurry, chief operations officer
- Jasmine Vasavada, director of government affairs and policy
This new EOT governance body is separate from the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). Its members will focus on creating systems and processes to support all of us through our growth as an organization and in support of our values.

 Reporting shifts
In addition to standing up EOT, a number of Commerce leaders will shift to report to different leaders, including the following:
- Division assistant directors of programs will shift to report to Diane, including Mark Barkley, Michael Furze, Chris Green, Corina Grigoras and Cindy Guertin-Anderson.
- Human Resources’ Theresa Burkheimer will become chief human resources officer and join ELT as an appointing authority.
- Chief Operations Officer Martin McMurry and Chief Financial Officer Joyce Miller will shift to report to Kendrick. Equity and Belonging Director Marissa Joy VanHoozer and Theresa will continue to report to Kendrick.
- Risk and Resilience Manager Tristan Allen and Internal Communications and Community Support Manager Dawn Geluso will shift to report to Marissa, their shops joining Commerce’s Office of Equity and Belonging.
With these changes, I can continue to spend more time in our communities and among stakeholders to make gains for big Commerce projects, relationships and community building, including with other agencies and organizations.
I invite you to:
- Review this Phase 3 FAQ
- Attend Real Talk with our new EOT at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, on Zoom
- Attend division and/or unit meetings, which will be scheduled throughout September for team members to come talk about the changes (stay tuned for meeting invitations from our Office of Equity and Belonging)
- Reach out with questions to your supervisor or Office of Equity and Belonging’s Rebecca Stillings
Background
In early April, we launched Phase 1 of our agency’s reorganization in response to the tremendous expansion the Legislature and governor entrusted us with. In May, we launched Phase 2. (You can read about Phase 1 here and Phase 2 here.)
This is an exciting time at Commerce, and change has been rapid. We know change can be hard, and we want to ensure you have the information you need to navigate through it.
I’m so proud of you all for the heart you bring to this work, the skill you apply every day, and the care and dedication you show to our communities. You are why Commerce is recognized as a great agency doing superb work.
Thank you for your service.
