Nearly $1 million in grants now available for transportation electrification projects

Two-phase application opens today for federally-recognized Tribes, small utilities, Washington state agencies and local governments

Commerce is seeking applications for Electrification of Transportation Systems (ETS) grants from the state Clean Energy Fund. The application is broken into two phases to lessen the administrative burden for applicants.

Deadline for PHASE ONE applications: 5 p.m. Sept. 15, 2022

PHASE TWO applications will close in November. Only completed PHASE ONE applications will be eligible to move into the second and final application process.

Program details

The 2021 State Energy Strategy recommends rapid electrification of all transportation markets and deep reductions to vehicle miles traveled (VMT) to meet Washington’s emission reduction goals for the transportation sector. These grants from the Clean Energy Fund will support equitable solutions to infrastructure development that are necessary to advance a clean, resilient and just energy future for all Washington residents.

This particular grant opportunity provides funding for projects that help communities prepare to construct and/or expand electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). Funding specifically for the purchase and installation of charging infrastructure will be available in the next round of ETS grants.

Commerce is seeking innovative projects that aim to:

  • Integrate and manage load using behavioral, software, hardware or other demand-side management technologies for on-road end uses and non-maritime off-road end uses;
  • Provide enduring benefits to vulnerable communities disproportionately burdened by air pollution, climate change impacts, or lack of transportation systems.

A total of $970,000 is available for eligible applicants and Commerce intends to make multiple awards.

Who can apply

  • Federally recognized Tribal governments
  • Small utilities
  • Washington state agencies
  • Local governments

More information, including all application material and examples of eligible technologies, is available on Commerce’s Clean Energy Fund Electrification of Transportation Systems Grants webpage.
