Youth Homelessness Prevention Steering Committee seeking new members

Diverse members with focus on lived experience will help develop statewide implementation plan

Innovations Human Trafficking Collaborative (IHTC), Communities of Color Coalition (C3), and the Office of Homeless Youth are recruiting individuals with lived experience to serve on the Youth Homelessness Prevention Steering Committee. The committee will oversee the implementation of policy and system changes recommended in the Shifting Services and Systems to Prevent Youth Housing Instability strategic plan to prevent youth homelessness across the state.

As the key stakeholders in this work, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) will be predominantly represented. The 22-member Steering Committee will be made up of 90% BIPOC youth and caregivers with geographic and identity diversity. Confidentiality is taken very seriously. Stories and content shared in steering committee meetings will not be shared without participant permission.

This is a paid opportunity for experts with lived experience. The time commitment is expected to be monthly meetings lasting about 3-4 hours, with some potential additional legislative workgroup meetings as necessary. Committee members will be paid $50 per hour in acknowledgement of the value of their expertise.

  • Youth lived experts: The intent of this recruitment is to have 12 young people under the age of 30 who experienced housing instability between the ages of 12-24. Trans, LGBQ, autistic and youth with mental health considerations will be prioritized. Those who have experienced housing instability because of caregivers’ mental health considerations or substance use disorder are encouraged.
  • Caregiver (parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent, chosen family) lived experts: We also hope to have 10 caregivers who have navigated gender identity or sexual orientation of their young person, or accessing services for mental health and/or substance use disorder services for them. Caregivers of youth with autism or intellectual or developmental disabilities and caregivers who are personally navigating their own mental health considerations or substance use disorder are also encouraged.
