Wallpaper, wood, crumbled plaster, and other materials from a house interior being remodelled lay on the floor near a window.

Attention Homeowners, General Contractors, and Real Estate Agents

When making property improvements that could disturb asbestos-containing materials, use only certified asbestos abatement contractors. They are specially trained to take care of job notification, worker safety precautions, and other requirements.

Two publications are available to help you understand what to do about asbestos safety during inspections, construction, remodeling, or demolition work.

Don’t assume newer homes and buildings are asbestos free. Floor tile, mastic, and roofing tar are some examples of asbestos-containing materials still allowed to be sold and used.

A good faith inspection for asbestos, performed by an AHERA certified building inspector is required before any remodel, repair, removal, or other work that could disturb suspect materials. Both building owners, and contractors are subject to a mandatory $600 per day fine if an asbestos good faith inspection is not performed.
