Protecting Bus Drivers from COVID-19 and Shoulder Injuries

A device designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on buses is driving up shoulder injuries for operators.

Bus drivers in several transit agencies in Washington have suffered shoulder injuries, particularly to the rotator cuff, from repeatedly opening and closing manually-operated COVID-19 safety shields.

The best solution is to automate the safety shields so that bus drivers can open and close them without overreaching and using awkward repetitive motions.
