COVID-19 medical and unemployment claim information for registered apprentices

This is a summary of medical and unemployment claim information for registered apprentices in Washington State relating to COVID-19.

The recent increase in the spread of COVID-19 cases is serious. The latest data show Washington is seeing more than 2,000 new cases a day. In response, new statewide restrictions are in effect.

Participants in registered apprenticeships have the same rights as other workers when filing medical or unemployment claims related to COVID-19. Here are a variety of scenarios and what types of benefits may be available.

The following is a list of agencies where participants and programs can find guidance regarding state resources during the pandemic:

Apprentices should file claims if they find themselves self-isolating and without income as a result of contracting COVID-19 while receiving supplemental instruction in the workplace.

Claims for workers’ compensation are handled individually. In general, first responders, health care providers, slaughterhouse workers, veterinarians and market workers are covered. In any case, L&I is required to pay provisional time-loss until a claim is rejected or allowed. If rejected, L&I will issue a bill to recover the money paid out.

If not currently drawing unemployment, a registered apprentice can file a claim with ESD. The process includes a series of questions to help determine what benefits are available: Unemployment Insurance; Pandemic Unemployment Assistance; Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation; Extended Benefits; or Paid Family Medical Leave. The waiting week for a new claim has been waived through Dec. 7.
