Auto Glass Repair or Replacement
A damaged windshield can become a safety hazard and may obstruct the driver's view. In Washington state, damage that impairs visibility can be considered an obstruction and may result in a traffic citation.
To ensure compliance with state policy, agencies and drivers must use state-contracted vendors for all auto glass windshield repairs and replacements. The vendor is required to obtain authorization from DES before any work is performed.
When should a windshield be repaired?
Have the windshield inspected as soon as you notice a chip, crack, or other damage. Even a small chip can spread over time due to temperature changes, road vibrations, and normal vehicle use, potentially leading to more extensive and costly repairs.

Washington state contracts with windshield repair vendors in each region of the state. For assistance locating the appropriate vendor and repair approval, contact DES Vendor Maintenance at 360-664-9228. Important reminders
- Repairs exceeding $100 requires the vendor to contact DES Vendor Maintenance for approval before work begins.
- Always use state-contracted vendors for windshield repairs and replacements.
- Contact DES Vendor Maintenance if you need assistance or guidance.
- An accident claim is not needed for damage to glass only. If there is also body damage to the vehicle, then a claim is required.
