Charging an electric vehicle
Payment cards
Each Fleet Operations electric vehicle is provided with two payment cards which provide access to many EV chargers across the state.
-
WEX Mastercard. This card works at Electrify America Stations and is used for roadside assistance. It is also accepted at some car washes but a current list of those is not available.
-
WEX RFID card. These cards work at several stations including Ampup, Blink, ChargePoint, EV Connect, EvGateway, Flo, Ionna, Noodoe, PowerFlex, Revel, and ViaLynk.
An up-to-date list of networked stations can be found on WEX’s website.
Route planning – public stations
Route planning tools, such as plugshare.com, are very helpful for finding charging stations that are open to the public. There are two filters in PlugShare you will want to adjust to make sure you are finding appropriate stations while driving a state vehicle.
-
Plug type: All non-Tesla EVs in the DES Fleet utilize the J-1772 or the CCS/SAE plug Make sure that your PlugShare map only shows these two plug types.
-
J-1772 plugs are generally going to be level 1 (house plug) or level 2 (commonly installed at offices, grocery stores, and many public locations). For level 2 chargers, most EVs will require 8-12 hours of charging to get a full charge, making them great for topping off or overnight charging, but not as suitable for mid-trip charging sessions.
-
CCS/SAE plugs are used for level 3, or “DC Fast Charging,” which is the quickest way to charge your vehicle. These are ideal if you need to charge your vehicle during your trip.
-
Networks: You’ll want to select only the charging networks that we provide access to through our WEX cards. See the list of charging networks that take WEX cards.
Once these filters are set up, the map will display any chargers in the area you are searching. Level 2 chargers will display as green location points. Fast chargers will display as orange location points. Learn more about using PlugShare filters.

 Route planning – state-operated stations
State agencies and offices operate an ever-growing number of charging stations. The Washington State EVSE driver application, called SAFE, is a great tool for finding state-owned electric vehicle charging locations. – WA SAFE Driver Map.
-
Charger Types: Blue location points are used to display level 2 charging locations. Orange location points are used for fast charger locations.
-
Charger Details: Click on any location point and find details about how to access the location. SAFE tool will include information on if access is restricted, if prior authorization is needed for access etc.
