Newhouse replacement building - March 21
|

Irv Newhouse Building
All construction work is weather-dependent and subject to change.
Work continues on the Newhouse Building replacement, nearby sidewalks, the east parking lot, and underground utilities. Next week crews will:
- Remove and replace a portion of sidewalk between Sid Snyder Avenue Southwest and 15th Avenue on the west side of Capitol Way.
- Deliver crane to job site on Friday, March 22.
- Complete interior framing on level one.
- Continue installing sheetrock on level one.
- Continue mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-in on multiple levels.
- Begin exterior framing on level four.
- Continue waterproofing and exterior insulation on levels one, two, and three.
- Begin installation of precast concrete that will make up the beautiful exterior of the building.

Pritchard sandstone removal - March 18

As the active construction phase of the Pritchard Rehabilitation and Expansion project begins, in the coming weeks DES will:
- Continue removal of sandstone from book stacks exterior.
- Begin removing hazardous materials from the upper three floors of book stacks.
- Continue hillside risk analysis.
- Complete site fencing and construction signage.
- Coordinate with art conservator to safely relocate Tobey painting during construction.

CAMPUS IMPACTS
Crews work on the corner of Capitol Way and 15th Avenue
Traffic/road closures
- One west lane of Capitol Way will be closed during work hours from March 21 - 29. Traffic diversion cones will used to direct traffic.
- Continued heavy truck and equipment traffic.
- One lane of Sid Snyder Avenue Southwest will be closed on Friday, March 22 from 7 a.m. to approximately 9 a.m. while a crane is moved onto the job site. Flaggers will be on site.
- The portion of Columbia Street between Sid Snyder Avenue Southwest and 15th Avenue Southwest remains closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
- Increased traffic to and from the Pritchard construction site is expected.
Pedestrian
Four sidewalks bordering the Newhouse construction site remain closed. Closed sidewalks include:
- West side of Capitol Way between Sid Snyder Avenue Southwest and 15th Avenue.
- South side of Sid Snyder Avenue Southwest.
- Sidewalks on both sides of Columbia Street.
Noise
- Increased noise levels and dust are expected at the Newhouse site between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and a small crew will work from 7 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Saturday.
- Increased noise can be expected at the Pritchard site between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Parking
- There is no parking along Columbia Street between Sid Snyder Avenue Southwest and 15th Avenue Southwest.
- The Pritchard parking lot will be closed effective March 25.

Over the past couple of weeks crews working on the Newhouse and Pritchard projects have:
- Completed exterior framing on levels one, two and three of the Newhouse replacement building.
- Erected initial fencing around the Pritchard site.
- Moved the 3D campus model from Pritchard to the Legislative Building where it will remain through the completion of the project.
- Completed tenant move-out of the Pritchard building.

Congressman Dan Newhouse visits jobsite
|
|
Congressman Dan Newhouse recently visited the construction site of the Newhouse Building replacement. Congressman Newhouse is the son of the late Irv Newhouse and is the U.S. Representative for Washington’s fourth congressional district which covers much of Central Washington. Prior to being elected to congress, Congressman Newhouse served four terms in the Washington State House of Representatives. |
