Advanced Tribal Relations Certificate Training

DES, in partnership with Evergreen State College, are excited to bring this new learning opportunity to you.

Gain the confidence and skills needed to collaborate with tribal leadership.

This professional certificate is designed for current and aspiring Tribal Liaison’s and other positions that interact directly with Washington State tribes. This class satisfies the requirements of RCW 43.376.050 regarding tribal liaisons within a state agencies.

The Advanced Tribal Relations Certificate is designed to help you gain knowledge of:

Treaties, tribal histories, sovereignty and co-management
Roles and responsibilities in government to government relations
Culturally competent practices for sustainable relationships
Case studies, current issues, and legal precedents
Tribal enterprises, agencies, and economic development

In order to complete the certificate, you will need to take three courses, over three quarters. Each quarter includes:

One in-person class at Evergreen
Three live online classes with faculty and guest speakers
One day-long, in-person excursion to a NW Washington tribe

There are three courses that make up this certification:

Fall Quarter: Context of Tribal Relations in Washington State: Culture, Sovereignty, & Resilience
Winter Quarter: History & Practice of Government-to-Government Relations: State, Tribal, Federal
Spring Quarter: Case Studies: Policies in Co-Management & Trends in State, Tribal, Federal Relationships

Registration: State employees may register via the Washington State Learning Center. Check with your supervisor before registering for training. For all other governmental entities, please use our online Training Request Registration Form.

Price: $1,624 per person/per quarter
