Lessons Learned in Choosing a VILT Platform
|
Hello,
We know that many agencies are reviewing virtual instructor-led training platforms (VILT) as they continue to refine how they deliver virtual training. Over the past few months, the DES Leadership Development and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion teams reviewed and evaluated the commonly used and recommended VILT platforms in order to decide which platform we would use to deliver training in the coming year.
We want to share our experience to help you as you make decisions regarding which VILT is best for your agency.
We looked at four major platforms:
- Adobe Connect
- Microsoft Teams
- WebEx
- Zoom
We reviewed and compared features between the platforms and more importantly, our experience with using them. We identified the pros/cons of each platform to aid us in our decision. The features we prioritized included:
- stability of the platform in not dropping users,
- user experience,
- IT support of the platform and
- accessibility
The platforms varied on the features they offered and whether they were better suited for intact teams or ad hoc meetings. Based on our review we chose Zoom. Zoom was stronger in the four key decision areas in our review than the other platforms for delivering an alternative to in-person training.
Although different agencies have restrictions on some VILTS for internal use, we found that agencies we reviewed with these restrictions did allow their staff to access Zoom via a web link.
We know how important the choice of platform is to effectively migrating curriculum to VILT delivery and facilitating learning virtually. We hope sharing our review helps you and your agency with these goals as well.
