DEL Director Dr. Bette Hyde |
Parents and caregivers are children’s first teachers so there’s no doubt about how crucial their impact is on early development. There are so many hard-working and devoted parents and caregivers out there that we at DEL wanted to recognize them. So, in honor of Parent Recognition Month, DEL and Seattle’s Child are naming one “unsung hero” every day in February. We collected applications from communities around the state. It was a tough job to narrow it down to 28 exceptional people to honor. However, we did and you can read about each hero daily on DEL’s Facebook page.
Our Unsung Heroes include parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All, however, are outstanding caregivers who shape the minds and lives of our youngest learners. Join me in congratulating all of our Unsung Heroes that we are recognizing this month and all of the unsung heroes in our communities.
Also this month, we and our partners at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and Thrive by Five Washington reported on the status of the Washington State Early Learning Plan, Washington’s roadmap for building a statewide early learning system. We are in the second year of implementing the 10-year plan. We got a great amount of additional “fuel” through our $60 million Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge grant award in December 2011 and a $25 million Maternal Infant Early Childhood Home Visiting grant in April 2012. The report outlines our accomplishments in 2012 and what we plan to do in 2013 to continue building a statewide early learning system. You can read more about our accomplishments here.
