DCYF launched a new webpage for families and friends of those in Juvenile Rehabilitation. The webpage will include family specific resources and communications to support the families of those in JR.

By partnering with families, DCYF sets young people up for successful futures beyond Juvenile Rehabilitation. Families are encouraged to stay connected and support young people in treatment, education opportunities, and programs offered within JR.

As part of this new page, families or friends can sign up to receive alerts and emails about secure facilities or Juvenile Rehabilitation.

Harbor Heights is Open

Harbor Heights

The Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) welcomed the first cohort of young men to Harbor Heights, the state’s newest juvenile rehabilitation facility.

Harbor Heights officially opened June 9, welcoming eight young men from Green Hill School who will participate in curated programming that provides behavior therapy, peer counseling, and workforce development.

The first cohort is made up of young men who applied to Harbor Heights and were selected after meeting certain criteria and participating in an interview.

Harbor Heights Superintendent Ken Rochelle personally met with the young men while they were at Green Hill to discuss the programming that he hopes will allow young people to take on leadership skills, build accountability, and create future paths for success.

“Something that brought me to Washington was the programming” said Superintendent Rochelle during a media preview event at Harbor Heights. “I see opportunities here that give the young men a chance to not recommit.”

July is Juvenile Rehabilitation Appreciation Month

JR appreciation month

Every July, Washington State honors the hard work of staff, volunteers, and partners that make a positive impact on the young people involved in juvenile rehabilitation (JR).

This work happens all year long and is sometimes overlooked, however during July, DCYF celebrates JR appreciation month to remind people that the work that is happening behind the scenes makes a difference for young people.

This year:

There are more than 600 young people in Washington's Juvenile Rehabilitation system of care. Washington state has three secure facilities and eight community facilities. The goal of JR is to deliver treatment, provide resources, and develop skills so young people can plan for their future and reenter their communities.

Graduates at JR Facilities Celebrated their Achievements

Graduation

From GEDs to bachelor's degrees, young people at Juvenile Rehabilitation facilities across Washington state were celebrated for reaching educational milestones that will help them in future education and employment.

This week, Green Hill staff joined families and educators to celebrate six young people who earned their Associates of Arts and two young men earning their Bachelor of Applied Science in Management from Centralia College.

“Education is more than books; it is gaining the tools for your future,” said one college graduate from Green Hill. “Your past does not decide where you go, and people change so let’s celebrate who we become.”
