Summer Issue:
Please note that every year, adoption support payments that would typically come at the end of June (for the month of July) will be late due to the end of the fiscal year. The payment will not be issued until the beginning of July and there could be additional delays due to the July 4th federal holiday. Post offices and banks are closed and that may affect the date you receive your payment (even direct deposit). We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
Based on your income and tax situation, you may be able to benefit from the Federal Adoption Tax Credit.
For adoptions finalized in 2024, the amount of the credit is $17,280. In addition, all children adopted out of foster care with an Adoption Support Agreement are able to qualify as “special needs” for the purpose of the adoption tax credit. This means that families can claim the full amount of the credit, regardless of expenses actually paid for the adoption.
Adoption Support Program staff are not tax professionals and are unable to give tax advice. However, we can provide you with a copy of the letter you received post-adoption finalization, that verifies the child was considered “special needs.”

Coordinated Care of Washington has partnered with Adoptee Mentoring Society (AMS) to provide no-cost, virtual individual and group mentoring for youth adopted from foster care in Washington state (ages 12-18). In 2025, adoptees can access the following:
-
1:1 virtual mentoring with a trained adult adoptee mentor who listens, supports, and provides resources. These sessions empower youth adoptees to shape their own narratives while discussing identity, birth family, race, gender, and more
- There will also be two virtual, no-cost group mentoring sessions (called Adoptee Lounges) available on July 14 and Oct. 13 from 5 to 6 p.m. Group mentoring is limited to five youth who share the experience of having been adopted from foster care and is facilitated by Angela Tucker. Group mentorship creates meaningful connections which provide adoptees with confidence, clarity, and a sense of belonging.
To register for 1:1 and/or group mentoring, email info@adopteementorship.org.
Want to learn more? Join Coordinated Care on June 18 at 12:30 p.m. at their office located at 1145 Broadway Suite 700 in Tacoma for an Adoptee Mentoring Society Information Session. Angela Tucker, widely renown speaker, author and founder of Adoptee Mentoring Society, will be sharing more information about no-cost mentorship for adoptees from foster care.
Light refreshments will be provided along with a free raffle for a signed copy of Angela’s book; "You Should be Grateful."
