Updates From the Strengthen Families Locally (SFL) Team

sfl

Dear Strengthen Families Locally community,

My garden is abundant with fruit (blueberries!) and my home is abundant with family this month! What is abundant in your life right now?

As planned, next week we will have another break, so the next newsletter will come out on August 30th.

In the last newsletter I shared news from the Governor’s office about supporting families in Washington state, and this week I have a story from the desk of the White House:

Biden-Harris Administration Actions to Keep Children and Families Safely Together and Supported

The White House hosted a convening on transforming child welfare to announce new policies that focus on preventing family separation and supporting and creating opportunities for families and youth. The convening brought together policymakers across federal, state, local, and tribal governments, philanthropy, child welfare and family support organizations, and young people and families who have personal experiences, to encourage further innovation, build new partnerships, and exchange best practices. The new announcements focus on four key areas:

  • Separating Poverty and Neglect
  • Prevention Services
  • Prioritizing Kin and Youth Needs
  • Innovations and Research

Many of these approaches align with DCYF and SFWA’s strategies for child abuse prevention. Read more here.

All the best,

Joy

This year's update includes three new sections which offer new insights to DCYF's child welfare intakes and out-of-home care placements, as well as updates to the existing sections in response to community input. Register to receive slides and a recording, even if you can’t attend.

Spotlight on Success:

Right now in the Strengthen Families Locally project, we are taking an Appreciative Inquiry approach to  highlighting successes in family support, so we can learn successful strategies and build on what works. This is part of the evaluation of our program. Consider sharing a story of the successes that your program has experienced! Here’s a story from Nespelem, Wa:

Trauma-Informed Care in DCYF: Over the last few years, a small team across DCYF has met monthly as the Trauma-Informed Champions Workgroup. Through the insights of this group and the support of DCYF leadership, the agency has now developed a set of Trauma-Informed and Healing-Centered Competencies, and an aligned Trauma-Informed and Healing-Centered Foundaitons training. Some of the Strengthening Families Washington team was able to attend a Train-The-Trainer with this material through July and August. We will be rolling out the training materials in our SFWA team and supporting other teams to hold the training as well. The intent of this effort is to provide trauma-informed training to all DCYF employees, and eventually, to community partners in early learning, adolescent and family support. We look forward to sharing common language and strategies for providing trauma-informed and healing-centered care to children and families across Washington, and to caring for our colleagues and our teams in trauma-informed ways as well. Stay tuned for more information!

Seeking young people to co-design a new pilot program! Paid opportunity: Focus groups in Pierce, Yakima and Spokane counties and online. The Office of Homeless Youth (OHY) and our partners Point Source Youth and Systems Change Partners are excited to share a paid opportunity for young people in Washington to co-design a new program for young people experiencing or at-risk of homelessness and housing instability. OHY and our partners are working with a team of youth consultants to lead to the co-design process for a Direct Cash Transfers pilot program. Later this month, we will host in-person and virtual co-design sessions with young people who have experienced housing instability or homelessness to participate in shaping this program. These sessions offer a valuable chance for young people to contribute their insights and help create an innovative new program.  If you are between the ages of 16 and 25, have experienced or are currently experiencing homelessness or housing instability, please sign up using the registration form linked below.  See dates and register here.
