What is Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMHC)

Mental health consultants can support children who may struggle with worries, anger, problem- solving, sharing, or controlling their feelings or behaviors, making friends, and difficulty in their environments. Mental health consultants help teachers and families learn how to handle these challenges and support positive behaviors. Share this flyer from the Office of Head Start with parents to start the conversation about IECMHC.

Facilitating a Referral for Mental Health Services

Families may be hesitant to move forward with a referral for various reasons including, but not limited to, existing stigma surrounding mental health; strong cultural beliefs about how mental health issues should be handled; concerns regarding how to pay for services; and transportation challenges. Facilitating a referral for mental health services involves helping families understand the value of engaging in these services and matching them with the best available provider to ensure a good fit. When program staff take intentional steps to facilitate a referral, families are more likely to accept, participate, and benefit from services. This brief from the Office of Head Start offers program staff guidance on special considerations for making and supporting successful referrals.

Brain-Building Through Play: Activities for Infants, Toddlers, and Children. This handout series, from the Center on the Developing Child, developed with support from the LEGO Foundation, provides games and play-based activities based on a child’s age. The activities for younger children are designed for adults to engage in with children. Activities for later ages allow the adults to step back, enabling children’s independence as they transition to playing more often with peers.
