Dear Strengthen Families Locally community,

Happy Parent Leadership Month! You can see a highlight of families receiving Unsung Heroes awards in our 4 SFL communities in the Share a Story section, below. I’m excited to be joining these awesome families for our Unsung Heros Celebration in a few weeks in Lacey.

For this week’s Black History Month story, I’m sharing an excerpt about Pura Belpré, a librarian and story teller in New York’s Public Library system who shared her cultural heritage with children and families.

Pura Belpré was an Afro-Puerto Rican folklorist and author who served as the first Latina librarian in the New York Public Library system in 1921. Her book, Perez y Martina was the first Spanish-language children’s book released by a mainstream U.S. publisher.

Listen to this newsletter on our podcast >

  • For children! Listen to Pura Belpré, Hidden Hero of History by Dorktales on YouTube.

Watch this video where William Walker of SUNY Oneonta, Paloma Celis Carbajal of the New York Public Library, and CENTRO Library Manager, Aníbal Arocho discuss the impact of Perez y Martina.

All the best,

Joy

A new mom helping other new moms | Unsung Hero

Stephanie Rosell, Spokane

I’ve worked with Stephanie and her daughter Izzie for almost a year now after Izzie was born in November 2022. Izzie began receiving therapy services at Stepping Stones while she resided at Maddie’s Place with Mom. Since the beginning, Stephanie has shown such care, love, and determination in raising Izzie and providing a good life for her.

Mom and Izzie moved to Isabella House and lived there through the summer of 2023. Stephanie found daycare for Izzie, housing, transportation, and a job for herself as she was preparing to graduate from Isabella House. Now, Stephanie works at Maddie’s Place helping other new moms on similar journeys. It has been such a pleasure to see Stephanie become an inspiring Mom and Izzie flourishing because of it. — Kaely Santos | Read about more Unsung Heroes on Seattle’s Child

DCYF has drafted a Language Access Plan (LAP) to promote equity and inclusion and offer language access services in a consistent manner across all divisions and offices. The project team is looking for feedback from DCYF staff, external organization partners, and families regarding the initial Plan and ways to improve it.  The Plan represents the procedures, processes, and best practices to promote language-based inclusion and enhance our capacity to serve families with a preferred language other than English. This will ensure everyone will get fair and timely access to services in their language of preference.

View an infographic here.

We are seeking input and engagement from our external partners, tribes, and families that communicate using a language other than English. Share the following outreach webinar invitations with external partners that work closely with families as well as the families that use DCYF services.
