Youth at the 2023 Strengthen Families Locally Retreat made “Friendship Salad” to share with the adults at their Kids Café.

Dear Strengthen Families Locally Community,

How do we strengthen families and support children? For Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month, I want to highlight some of the resources which have come across my desk recently. Of course, everything in this newsletter is focused on strengthening families and preventing child abuse and neglect. But these resources might be of special interest to you!

TRANSFORM Podcast Episode 6: Reimagining The Child Welfare System: Encouraging Families To Thrive. Host Dr. Catherine Cerulli and guest Dr. Mical Raz explore themes of Poor Parenting vs. Poor Parents, mandatory reporting, Child Protective Services being used as a surveillance tool rather than a support tool, and how we can reframe and reimagine these systems. Listen to the story here. Also check out Episode 5: Using Evidence Based Research to Reduce Teen Pregnancy.

Title IV-E Prevention Services Clearinghouse releases new ratings: As of April 2023, the Prevention Services Clearinghouse has reviewed 141 programs and services; 71 of these have been rated as promising, supported, or well-supported. New ratings are now available for programs and services including: Common Sense Parenting® – School Age | Common Sense Parenting® of Toddlers and Preschoolers | Functional Family Probation and Parole | Multisystemic Therapy – Building Stronger Families | Promoting First Relationships® | Trauma Systems Therapy

Place Matters: The Environment We Create Shapes the Foundations of Healthy Development from the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child. Building on the Center’s growing focus on upstream, systemic factors that shape the conditions in which families are raising young children, the new paper examines how a wide range of conditions in the places where children live, grow, play, and learn can get “under the skin” and affect their development and lifelong health. Read the paper here.

Hear the stories directly from parents on why easy and equitable access to prevention resources is key to helping them best care for their children in the National Child Abuse Prevention Month Multimedia gallery.

All the best,

Joy

“As a provider, I needed to do a report to DCYF for a concern I had with the families wellbeing and safety. I knew the family was doing their best and lacked the education on safety. Instead of just calling, I met with the family and explained to them my concerns, my observations, and encouraged them to be part of the process and call themselves. They did. This opened the door to services the family needed to finally feel that they can go from just surviving to thriving.” – Washington Provider
