Updates From the Strengthen Families Locally (SFL) Team

sfl

Dear Strengthen Families Locally Community,

The sunshine and warming weather is wonderful, but I was quite surprised by the sudden onset of allergy season this week! I hope others aren’t suffering badly.

March has so many celebrations! I want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate Women’s History Month. The theme for 2023 is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories”. The theme celebrates journalists, story tellers, and oral historians of all kinds, women who pass along the stories and traditions of their ancestors and bring new stories to light. This theme fits our Strengthen Families Locally project perfectly! See the National Women’s History Alliance for more information on events and the project.

Intersectionality is important when learning about any historical trend, and women’s history is rich with folx from many different cultures and backgrounds who worked tirelessly to make the world a better place for women and for everyone. Read the Re Center’s guide to Centering Women’s History Month in Intersectionality here.

“We are volcanoes. When we women offer our experience as our truth, all the maps change. There are new mountains. That’s what I want — to hear you erupting. You Mount Saint Helens-es who don’t know the power in you — I want to hear you… If we don’t tell our truth, who will?” – Ursula K. LeGuin

All the best,

Joy

Rayna Espinosa Ives is a strong, authentic voice for Native community | Unsung Hero

Bremerton: “Rayna is a person who is full of love and grace for those around her. Her understanding of her own culture helped our leadership in significant ways to understand why our typical approach would not work with a grant reaching into tribal communities for advocacy. She went to Arizona for a parent conference and walked through the boarding school exhibit and then led our group in a healing circle by again sharing her Native song while still feeling her own pain.” Read Rayna's full story at Seattle’s Child.

All month in February, DCYF celebrated Parent Recognition Month with our Unsung Heroes. Stories of parents exhibiting Family Protective Factors will be published throughout the month on the DCYF Facebook Page and Seattle’s Child.
