Dear Strengthen Families Locally Community,

Happy 2023! From all of us at DCYF Strengthening Families Washington, we wish you a wonderful new year full of health and wellness for your families and communities. I’m excited for what’s on the horizon from the Strengthen Families Locally project!

Speaking of upcoming events, the 2023 SFL Retreat registration is open! This event is for participants in meetings and planning groups in our 4 Strengthen Families Locally communities. We will gather and talk about “Healing Through Togetherness”, including conversations about healing-centered engagement, Community Cafes, and Sensemaking sessions. Travel and accommodations are provided, and parents and caregivers are supported to attend! See the full agenda and register on the SFL website under Meetings and Events.

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something.” - Neil Gaiman

All the best,

Joy

Isolated New Mom

“A client of mine's baby was born 4 weeks premature. For the first month mother struggled to get back and forth to Seattle Children's to see her first child. Mother struggled to bond with baby due to being so far away and Covid not allowing her to stay with her child during this time. Through engagement with a home visiting program she was able to learn new ways to bond with baby now that baby is home from the hospital.” – Washington provider

Our society’s responses to climate stressors must involve interventions to address these inequities. For this webinar, Abt is joined by three experts to discuss their experiences addressing the disproportionate effects of climate change. Effectively engaging dads in home visiting from the Washington Interagency Fatherhood Council. Despite the clear impact fathers have on their families, most child and family services do not consistently and effectively engage fathers.  Home visiting presents a tremendous opportunity to connect with fathers and support the well-being of children and parents by serving the whole family with effective interventions.  Join us to learn more about how we can begin to effectively engage dads in the home visiting process to support families and children.  February 16, 2023: 11:30 am - 1:00 pm - Register Here.

Finding Joy After Adverse Childhood Experiences: Ideally, parents/caregivers imprint joy in the developing brain by smiling, laughing, and playing with the child. If you lacked such experiences, you can rewire your brain for joy. Read the article By Dr. Glenn Schiraldi, PACEs Connection member.

Innovate (News and New Insights)

January is National Mentoring Month: a month dedicated to celebrating mentors and their positive influence on young people, as well as an opportunity to raise public awareness of the importance of mentoring. To celebrate, Gov. Jay Inslee proclaimed January as Mentoring Month in Washington State. Youth who have mentors experience many benefits. They are more likely to enroll in college and less likely to drink or do drugs. They participate in more sports and extracurricular activities, have better school attendance, and show an overall improvement in social well-being. Thousands of students across Washington need a caring adult in their lives. Folks interested in becoming a mentor should reach out to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington, Communities In Schools of Washington, Friends of the Children, Boys and Girls Clubs of Washington state, OurGEMS, or Mentor Washington, which are all ready to help volunteers get connected with students to mentor. To learn more about mentoring programs and opportunities, contact tom.pennella@dcyf.wa.gov.
