Each week, DCYF ESIT Tribal Support Specialist Brian Frisina provides a key topic to help us get to know our Tribal Nations partners better.

This week’s topic is: 

Indigenous Peoples' Day in Washington State

The importance of Indigenous People’s Day is recognition. What was a day celebrating the beginning of a genocide of Native peoples and culture, has become a day of recognition? It is the very beginning of a long road to not only recognizing Indigenous peoples, lands, treaty rights, and cultures, but to also recognize past and present hardships confronted by Native people daily. Through recognition, we can learn to respect Native culture and Tribal sovereignty.

These states are ditching Columbus Day to observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead. Read full CNN article by Scottie Andrew:

Spotlight on the Parent Institute for Engagement (PIE): Bee Balasa

PIE is ESIT’s 12-month training program designed for parents or caregivers with children who have received ESIT services through an ESIT program. The goal of PIE is to enhance the leadership and advocacy skills of participants so they can become active leaders in their communities.

ESIT would like to introduce you to Bee Balasa

Hi everyone! I’m Bee and live on Whidbey Island with my spouse, little one (3 years old) and animals. I first learned of early intervention when my child was born prematurely at 32 weeks due to preeclampsia. With support, we were able to navigate his feeding and sensory needs while also learning about how he was impacted by trauma during his time in the NICU.

I work as a Family Resource Coordinator now, and it drives my passion to meet parents where they are and support them in navigating supports for their family and advocating for themselves and their children. I also aim to work to advocate as a Trans parent and supporting LGBTQIA+ parents and children in our community.

Training opportunity for NeuroRelational Framework

Kids

Early Support for Infants and Toddlers (ESIT) and the Washington Association of Infant Mental Health (WA-AIMH) are excited to share an incredible training! 

The NeuroRelational Framework (NRF) is being offered to qualified and selected multi-disciplinary teams across Washington State. This advanced Infant and Family Relational Health (IFRH), also known as Infant Mental Health (IMH), training focuses on the integration of social-emotional capacities with developmental needs of very young children and their families.  

The course is designed with a team approach to learning, offering ESIT Provider Agencies more advanced and intensive knowledge about IFRH within their system of services and supports to ESIT families. It is part of the overall State Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP) with a focus to build and improve IFRH practices amongst the ESIT workforce.

The following information outlines the details for submitting an “Expression of Interest.” We are hopeful your program will find the benefits of this exciting opportunity!

CCC-SLP, from Holly Ridge Center will be facilitating a conversation on Language Learning through Music. Debi has led many language groups with an emphasis on music and is very knowledgeable about this topic.
