Dear Strengthen Families Locally Community,

I hope you are all well this week! We’ve had a little reprieve from the heat on the West side, along with a rare thunderstorm (as I write this on Wednesday morning). It sounds like the eastside has continued to experience a heat wave, so hopefully you are all staying cool and hydrated.

I have an ear to the ground for upcoming health concerns this week. I have heard worrying statistics about two different non-Covid outbreaks: Public health officials at the CDC and WA DOH are tracking Monkeypox, which has increasing numbers in Washington state.  And, concerningly, a case plus sewage analysis in New York state points to a potential outbreak of Polio. I hope you are all vaccinated and staying safe and healthy from these two dangerous disease. Especially, please make sure that children you know are vaccinated against Polio, which is a potentially debilitating and entirely preventable disease (with a long track record of vaccine success!)

“More than ever before, there is a global understanding that long-term social, economic, and environmental development would be impossible without healthy families, communities, and countries” - Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway

All the best,

Joy

Distance Learning

“During COVID, my family was very lucky that we got to stay at home together and still receive a paycheck. But …my sons receive a lot of help at their school and their dad and me are not teachers and we don't know the best ways to help them learn. It was really hard and a lot of it felt overwhelming. My sons were acting out and the school was so boring over the computer. It made us really think about what we were doing and as it best for our kids. I felt like I was failing at everything. Now I see that I was doing my best but I think my kids social and emotional health really suffered and I'm not sure that we are totally moving on from it. We are on wait lists for mental health services, but they are very long and I know a lot of kids need help.” – Washington parent in July of 2022
