The distraction-jb

Racism: the Distraction. Inspired by Toni Morrision's quote. Art by Jahla Brown, DCYF ESIT Stakeholder Engagement Specialist.

“The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being."
-Toni Morrison

Tribal Topic of the Week

Brian Frisina, DCYF ESIT Tribal Consultant, smiling at the camera

Each week, DCYF ESIT Tribal Program Consultant Brian Frisina will provide a key topic to help support us all in getting to know our Tribal Nations partners better.

This week’s topic is: Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975

The Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975 (Public Law 93-638) authorized the Secretary of the Interior, the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, and some other government agencies to enter into contracts with, and make grants directly to, federally recognized Indian tribes. The tribes would have authority for how they administered the funds, which gave them greater control over their welfare.
