DCYF Suspending In-Person Training

Dear Early Learning State-Approved Trainers:

Thank you for responding to the risks of the COVID-19 virus as we all adjust to following the Governor’s Stay Home, Stay Healthy order. When that order is lifted, we must continue to ensure training delivery adheres to social distancing and group guidance as provided by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Thank you for your commitment to sustain the health and safety of yourself and early learning providers.

DCYF is suspending all in-person training between now and May 31, 2020.

If you have in-person training scheduled:

  • Cancel or reschedule in-person training [in-service (STARS) hours] throughout the state between now and May 31, 2020.
  • You can change your delivery method to online or self-paced if you choose.
  • Update MERIT as soon as possible to reflect the updated delivery strategy or cancellation.

Online health and safety training will remain available at the DCYF training portal for early learning professionals.

If you have further questions about training delivery, please email training@dcyf.wa.gov.

Tips for changing your training delivery to online or self-paced:

These tips may be used for online or self-paced delivery, and you can try out several combinations to find what will work best with your training content:

  • Consider the length of your training. If it is more than three hours in-person, we recommend breaking the training into shorter units using either or both online or self-paced strategies.
  • Use live webinar or other online formats. Fees may be associated with online software. Examples include:
  • Incorporate interactive polling features:
  • Use independent study and correspond via email or postal mail.
  • Organize small group follow up discussions – by webinar or phone.
