The Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) is pleased to announce a new round of funding is available for owners of historic barns in Washington State. The Heritage Barn Initiative is a grant program of DAHP, and is administered under contract to the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation.
The funding, allocated by the Washington State Legislature as part of the 2025-2027 state budget, marks the 10th round of Heritage Barn Initiative grants. Originally established in 2007, the Heritage Barn Initiative, is a Register of statewide, historically significant barns. Owners of designated heritage barns are eligible to apply for grants to assist with barn stabilization and rehabilitation projects. This year, approximately $900,000 is available in funding. Grant awards typically range from $25,000-$40,000, with the maximum eligible grant award capped at $75,000. The deadline to submit applications for Heritage Barn Initiative grants is Sunday, October 19, 2025, at 11:59 pm.
The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation and DAHP will be hosting free online information sessions on September 5, at 4:00-5:00 pm and September 10, at 5:30-6:30 pm for anyone wishing to learn more about the Heritage Barn Initiative. Washington Trust and DAHP staff will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the application process. Recordings of the application walkthrough will be posted on the Washington Trust’s website following the information sessions.
