Setting the pace for a productive new year with Swift Orange Line Construction and a new Swift Blue Line station!

Welcome to Swift Network News Vol. 3, Issue 8

Construction continues along the project corridor for Community Transit’s Swift Orange Line! Since the start of construction in 2022, crews have started working at seven out of the ten new Swift stations along the corridor. Some of the locations – such as the stations along 33rd Ave West and 36th Ave West – are nearly completed, and will be ready for crews to install the final station amenities once major construction is complete! Continue reading to preview what the future Swift Orange Line stations will look and feel like.

Construction is also almost complete at the new Swift Blue Line station at Hwy 99 and 196th St Southwest. This new station will open in the coming months!

In this issue of the Swift Network News:

Notice: At Swamp Creek Park & Ride, the Alderwood Water District (AWWD) will be completing some underground water utility upgrades within the next few weeks. This work will include some planned water shutoffs for some customers. All residents affected by this work will receive a notification directly from AWWD. If you have any questions about this work, please call (425) 743-4605 or email help@awwd.com.

Get ready for new Swift Orange Line stations

Along the Swift Orange Line corridor, some bus station platforms have been completed or are nearing completion. Although the platforms may be ready, the new bus shelters and other station amenities will not be installed quite yet. Our manufacturers are working hard to build the station kits, which will be installed after major construction is completed. Each station will have many new amenities to increase ridership experience and accessibility, such as the bus shelter, stop signage, and ORCA card readers!

What's different about these Swift stations?

  • New lighting elements to provide better visibility at night
  • Upgraded tactile ground panels to improve accessibility
  • New ticket vending machines
  • New digital signage to display bus arrival information, share time-sensitive announcements, and allow for audible messaging
  • New windscreen design to improve effectiveness in rainy conditions and protect from windchill
  • New station seating to improve comfort

New Swift Blue Line station at Hwy 99 and 196th St Southwest opening soon!

As part of the Swift Orange Line project, we are building a new Swift Blue Line station at the intersection of Hwy 99 and 196th St Southwest near our planned Swift Orange Line Station on 196th St Southwest. These stations will serve as a key transfer point between the two Swift lines. Once completed, you’ll be able to get around Snohomish County faster and easier, connecting you with our Swift network and regional transit options.

Crews are continuing to make progress on building the station platforms in this area. Preparation for the station platforms – including upgrading utilities, upgrading the street, and building the station areas – is nearly complete! In the coming months, crews will install the new Swift Blue Line station shelter and amenities. Stay tuned for the Swift Blue Line Hwy 99 and 196th St SW station opening in the coming months!

What’s in progress for the Swift Orange Line

Edmonds College

In the coming months, crews will continue working in the new transit loop to:

  • Complete remaining utility upgrades and storm drain connections
  • Pave the new transit loop
  • Build new bus loading platforms and install transit center amenities (including new lighting and a new Swift Orange Line station)

Lynnwood Transit Center

  • Crews will soon install the remaining steel canopies for the new Swift Orange station.

McCollum Park

Since the beginning of this year, crews have been prioritizing upgrading connections to the Park & Ride. This work will ensure that people walking or rolling can better access the Park and Ride and athletic fields.

Recent construction activities include:

  • Upgrading sidewalks and curb ramps along Dumas Road
  • Parking lot demolition along Park Road near the southern parking lot
  • Restoring crossings and connections to the Park & Ride

After this is completed, crews will begin demolishing the existing transit loop. Later this year, riders will need to board at the new temporary bus stop along Park Road, located across from the new southern parking lot. This parking lot will be used as a temporary transit loop for buses to enter the Park & Ride and turn around back towards Dumas Road. We will follow up with details in future Swift Network Newsletters.

We appreciate your patience as crews continue to complete some demolition and paving activities near the southern entrance to the parking lot on Park Road!

Swamp Creek Park & Ride

Crews are working on completing the sidewalk and street upgrades for the station installation, including:

  • Digging (potholing) to identify and upgrade underground utilities
  • Demolishing and upgrading sections of the street and sidewalk

  • Traffic lane shifts on 164th St Southwest and at the entrance to the park & ride

36th Ave West Swift Orange Line Stations

Work is nearing completion with crews finishing up:

  • Southbound: Paving, landscaping, and finishing touches to the station platform
  • Northbound: Completing final landscaping activities prior to the station kit being installed

Swift Orange Line will connect south Snohomish County to the region’s high-capacity transit network when Sound Transit’s Link light rail extends to Lynnwood.

Construction began in May 2022. Swift Orange Line service is scheduled to start in 2024.

During construction, we will occasionally send out email updates to share updates about construction, upcoming traffic impacts, and more information about the project. See more details at Community Transit Swift Orange Line.
