I love it when I get to meet with kids in our city. My
friend Pierce attends Terminal Park Elementary School, and wanted to come in
and see how city hall works. We took a little tour and then went to council
chambers so Pierce could use the gavel and call a meeting to order. He told me he has an interest in local
politics - and as sharp as he is, I think he'll do a great job!

Governor Jay Inslee visited Auburn on Tuesday and toured
the WorkSource Center. WorkSource provides great resources
for those employers looking for job candidates and also sources and screens
candidates for the positions. The resources include job fairs, recruiting
events, mock interview sessions and on-the-job training. Gov. Inslee joined one
of the classes in session and asked them about their individual job searches. Each
story was different and he listened with compassion and asked them what they
see as their opportunities. Each was thankful for WorkSource and also the
Workforce Development Council which is a federally designated
workforce investment board (one of 550 across the U.S.).
I was honored to be able to spend almost an hour with
Gov. Inslee after the tour, talking with him one-on-one about the issues facing
Auburn. We talked about the need for a state transportation package, the sharing
of revenue from marijuana sales so that our local police force can adequately
handle the increased activity associated with the legalization, and economic
development in Auburn. I shared our excitement over the renewed vitality in our
downtown and how important transit-oriented development is to us.
It was fun
sharing a very down to earth conversation - with no cameras and no media and a
genuine desire to learn about the issues we each face.
It's time for the D.A.R.E. graduations to commence, and this week I had the opportunity to celebrate with
Ilalko Elementary and Chinook Elementary 5th graders, teachers, principals and
families. Fifth Grade students in the Auburn School District go through a 10-week D.A.R.E. program taught by retired APD Officer McCluskey. Congratulations
to the essay winners from each school:
-
Ilalko: Erika Wedum, Malia Ohira, Colin Rylands and Ajok Miyar.
-
Chinook: Ezrayah Nelson, Jacklyn Schneider, Trinity Lenahan, Hazen Thomas and Julian East.
