 Welcome to 2015!
I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and IF you made a
New Year’s Resolution that you are sticking to it! One of my commitments was to
Public Health. When we were successful in keeping the King County Public Health
Clinic open for the next two years, I committed to helping find reliable
funding sources for the future and to support public health issues.
One of those issues is early learning. On Wednesday I attended
the King County Early Learning Symposium and Roundtable led by King County
Executive Dow Constantine where he kicked off his initiative “Best Starts For
Kids.” Over 200 experts, elected officials and staff came together to hear
presentations including one from our own Auburn School District Superintendent
Dr. Kip Herren! He shared information about the district's outstanding 3rd grade reading
test scores.
The three key components of Best Starts For Kids are:
- Pregnancy & Early Childhood
- School-aged Children & Youth
- Communities of Opportunity Fund
Another of the presentations was from Vroom which provides
brain building moments for babies. If you have a small child or know someone
with a small child, I highly encourage you to checkout Vroom’s website and to
download the app that will give daily, small (but significant) activities that fit
into your daily routine and can mean so much to your child. There are so many
studies that link success in school and life to early (birth to three)
childhood learning.
I will share more with you as information becomes available
and when we have opportunities to involve the community and I hope you’ll join us!
Complete Highway 167
Tuesday found us in Tacoma meeting with mayors from Fife,
Puyallup and Tacoma, the Pierce County Executive, representatives from the
Ports of Seattle and Tacoma and others to discuss our on-going support of the
completion of SR167. We are encouraging the State Legislature to pass a
transportation package that will fund SR167 improvements and extension to I-5.
What would you do?
You might be aware that Auburn, along with Tukwila, Renton,
Kent, and Federal Way owns our 911 system – Valley Communications Center
(ValleyCom), but what would you like to know about how it’s operated, owned,
funded, etc.? We are preparing for ValleyCom to present to your City Council,
and would like to customize it to information that you would like to know. Please share your thoughts and ideas!
Have you been to the Auburn Golf Course in the past couple
of weeks? If so, you might have noticed that Copper Falls Restaurant has been
closed. We want to thank them for the past seven years of service at the course and wish them the very best with their other
restaurants – Al Lago, Verrazano’s, and The Cliff House. There
will be a new restaurant debuting in the very near future,
so stay tuned for updates and excitement!
