Auburn Steps Up and Cleans Up!
Saturday was our annual Clean Sweep, and in typical Auburn fashion, you showed up in force and ready to work! We began the day at 7:30 with a breakfast sponsored and served by the Kiwanis and Longhorn Barbecue. At 8:00am, the ceremonial sweep down Main Street took place. Typically, I walk and sweep, but this year was a bit different. I had the opportunity to ride Auburn High School Robotics Team’s “Trojan Horse” down the center of the street. Great enthusiasm and intelligence on display by the students on this team! Your City Councilmembers, Senator Joe Fain, Auburn School Board President Ray Vefik and about 600 others were ready to work on several projects around town. Work they did! A cool new playground was built at Indian Tom Park and over 10,000 plantings along the Reddington Levy were surrounded with mulch. We had some rain, we had some sun, and I would venture to say, a few sore muscles on Sunday.
One of the groups that came out to support efforts at the Reddington Levy was Latinos Unidos from Olympic Middle School (pictured above). I asked their leader, Pilar Hunter to send me some information about the kids. Here’s what she provided:
“Four of our students were invited to the Latino Educational Achievement Project (LEAP). These students were so inspired to get involved with their education and communities they asked to form a club. With the support of our Principal Jason Hill and the guidance of our great office staff Jonna May, ASB and Laurali Larson, office manager, we at Olympic Middle School est. a Latino Club "Latinos Unidos" on March 11, 2014. We have had over 70 students attend one or more meetings.
We started with raising 200lbs for the Auburn food bank and have expanded our effort to give back more to our community.
Our campaign is simple: Three for Tee's - All members donate 3 or more hours to earn a club T-shirt.
For Auburn Clean Sweep 35 of our members, 2 siblings and 4 helpers showed up at 7am to donate their time. It was an awesome experience for all of us.
Our volunteering has also included:
- Auburn food drive
- Soccer for success
- Junior Achievement
- Church Rummage Sales
Some students have cleaned up their apartment complexes to show pride in their neighborhood. Together in less than two short months we have reached over 200 hours.”
So impressed by these kids and the pride they have because they earned their T-shirts, and are making a difference in their community.
 Can you help us out?
Spring is in the air! The mix of sun, rain and clouds is helping grass, weeds and other vegetation to grow, grow, grow. We need your help in keeping our City looking beautiful! If you own vacant or undeveloped property or own or rent a house or duplex or multi-family property, please keep your grass, weeds and other vegetation regularly cut and maintained. The same goes if you own or operate a commercial or industrial property or business. Your efforts will make a huge difference in keeping our City looking great, help everyone’s property values and make Auburn a more welcoming place for visitors. Thanks you for your help!
The cities of Auburn, Federal Way, Kent, Renton and Tukwila are launching TrackMole, a new software program that helps police departments, businesses, organizations and individuals recover lost or stolen property. By creating a free online account and registering the serial numbers, individuals and businesses significantly increase the chance of recovering property if it is lost or stolen. The program also helps police departments catch criminals and identify owners of property. The program is free and available to all. Visit https://trackmole.com/ to get started now!
What would you do?
Our Parks, Arts & Recreation department offers some great programs! Are there programs that we don't currently offer that you would like us to consider? Let me know what you think!
For those that would like to see the feedback from last week's question on how you would spend $1 million to fix something in Auburn, you can view that here.
