One of my favorite days of the year is Clean Sweep, and once again, our community showed up in the best way possible. Clean Sweep 2026 was filled with energy and generosity and a whole lot of pride in Auburn.
From Game Farm Park to Lakeland Hills, from Lea Hill to downtown, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work. At Game Farm Park, teams painted shelters, refreshed play areas, and planted new trees. Village Square looks incredible after volunteers cleared invasive plants, and over at Brannan Park, crews tackled a massive cleanup effort while also improving the playground and installing a new split rail fence.
I loved seeing longtime partners like the Avery Huffman Foundation continuing their work at Lakeland Hills Park, and community groups at Sunset Park, Mountain View Cemetery, and Mill Pond making meaningful improvements that everyone will benefit from. At Roegner Park and Les Gove Park, volunteers even rebuilt picnic tables -- projects that take real teamwork and care!
And weāre not done yet. Planting projects will continue at Veterans Memorial Park, Bi-Centennial Park, Game Farm Park, the Postmark Center for the Arts, and along Main Street, keeping that momentum going.
Thank you everyone for helping Auburn shine!

Last week, the President approved a Major Disaster Declaration related to the severe storms, flooding, and landslides our region experienced in December 2025. This declaration opens the door for critical federal support to communities across Washington, including here in Auburn.
There are two key components to this assistance. The first is Individual Assistance, which is available to residents who were impacted by the storms. If you experienced damage or losses, I encourage you to explore your eligibility and apply through FEMA at or by calling 1-800-621-3362. The current application deadline is June 6, though extensions are sometimes granted. In the coming weeks, FEMA and our state and county partners will also be setting up local assistance centers -- weāll be sure to share those details as soon as theyāre available.
The second is Public Assistance, which helps cities like Auburn recover the cost of emergency response and infrastructure repairs. Our team has already submitted a request to participate in this program, and weāll be working closely with our partners to ensure weāre maximizing available resources to support our recovery efforts.
While the storms are behind us, the recovery continuesāand this declaration is an important step forward. Thank you to everyone who has shown resilience, patience, and care for one another throughout this process.
The following is a news release sent by our partners at the Washington State Department of Transportation.
---
All lanes of eastbound State Route 18 will close from 10 p.m. Monday, April 27, to 4 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, between C Street Southwest and Auburn Way South as crews work to finalize a paving project that began last year.
The northbound and southbound SR 167 ramps to eastbound SR 18 also will close from 9 p.m. Monday, April 27, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 28.
Additional overnight lane and ramp closures also are planned from as early as 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly Monday night, April 27, through Friday morning, May 1, on eastbound SR 18 between C Street Southwest and the Green River bridge.
Signed detours will guide people around road and ramp closures. This work requires dry weather and some nights may be postponed if rain is forecast.
Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will perform lane striping along SR 18 and multiple on- and off-ramps during these nightly closures. This overnight work supports a projectĀ thatĀ repaved a 3-mile stretch of eastbound SR 18Ā in Auburn.Ā Ā
Real-time traffic information is available on the WSDOTĀ mobile appĀ and theĀ real-time travel map.Ā

As we continue celebrating Earth Month, I encourage you to take advantage of an easy and impactful way to reduce, reuse, and recycle here in Auburn.
Gather up those harder-to-recycle items -- electronics, polystyrene foam, paper for shredding, and old textiles -- and bring them to the WM #RecycleRight collection event. Itās a simple step that makes a big difference for our environment and helps keep Auburn clean and sustainable for future generations.

Thursday, we welcomed some very special guests to City Hall for Bring Your Child to Work Day, and it was such a fun and energizing way to spend the day!
We started the day at the REC Teen Center at the Auburn Community & Event Center, where the kids gathered for breakfast, picked up their goody bags, and got ready for a full day of learning and exploration.
After the REC, the kids spent time with their parents or grandparents, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the important work happening across our City departments. We regrouped for lunch and a few photos before heading out on tours, and as always, the old jail was a big hit!
Itās always inspiring to see the next generation so curious, engaged, and excited about their community. Who knows -- we may have a few future councilmembers in the group!
Registration is open for National Night Out, and right now, you can sign up for a neighborhood event and invite one of our staff to attend.Ā
National Night Out is one of my favorite summer events. And that's because our city staff, police, and elected officials will come to your community and neighborhoods, ready to chat, mingle, and discuss the city we live in -- what we're doing to make it better and how we can all work together to achieve that goal.Ā
It's a fantastic opportunity not only to meet and talk with us, but also with your neighbors! How many of you know your neighbors on even a first-name basis? Well, now's your chance!
Register online on our city website -- our city staff will be in touch in the coming weeks and months on next steps! Including banners and materials for your neighborhood event and even your very own National Night Out shirt!
As Auburn continues to grow, weāre planning ahead to ensure our public safety services keep pace with our communityās needs. One important step in that effort is the proposed new Auburn Police Headquarters, currently in the planning phase and designed to better support our officers, improve response capabilities, and serve Auburn well into the future.
Our current Police Headquarters, originally built in 1946 and later converted for police use, no longer meets modern standards and falls significantly short on space for todayās operations. With Auburnās population expected to grow to more than 114,000 in the coming years, itās critical that we thoughtfully plan for a facility that reflects our values.
The proposed new facility near Les Gove Park would bring all police divisions together in one location, include a dedicated wellness center to support our officers, and incorporate modern, sustainable design and technology. This project is still in the early stages, and your input is an important part of shaping what comes next.
I encourage you to take a few moments to learn more and share your thoughts by visiting the project story map and completing the survey.
Your voice matters as we plan for Auburnās future -- please take the survey and help guide this important investment in our community!

Earlier this week, we had the opportunity to come together at Les Gove Park to celebrate Arbor Day here in Auburn, and it was a wonderful reminder of how something as simple as planting a tree can bring people together in a meaningful way!
I was joined by Councilmembers Rakes and Stirgus, members of the Auburn Garden Club, Tree Board, Park Board, and partners from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. We planted a Western Hemlock and took a moment to reflect on the importance of caring for our urban forest.
During the celebration, I was also proud to officially proclaim April 21, 2026, as Arbor Day in Auburn and to recognize our continued designation as a Tree City USA community. That recognition represents years of commitment, from thoughtful planning and investment to the volunteers and staff who help maintain and grow our tree canopy year after year.
It was a great morning spent outdoors with community partners and residents alike, and a reminder that even small acts can have a lasting impact for generations to come!
Congratulations to Deputy Mayor Tracy Taylor for being selected as one of King County Executive Zahilayās Hometown Heroes! I was honored to be her guest along with her family and Councilmember Stirgus as Tracy accepted the award for being a new and impactful elected official in King County. She was honored for her work with non-profits in our region as well. Itās always a great day when Auburn is mentioned for the great work and service to our region!

Auburn is rich with history ā from historical Main Street to the artifacts preserved throughoutĀ White River Valley MuseumĀ ā I am excited to share these stories with all of you each week.Ā

Green River Volkswagen dealership, 1973. Volkswagen vehicles were not available for purchase in the United States until 1949, after the company had been reformed under the control of the West German government after World War II. During the war, Volkswagen cars were associated with the support of Adolph Hitler and the Nazi party-controlled German government. By the 1960s and 1970s that reputation was long gone, and several Volkswagen models (especially the classic āhippie vanā Type 2 van) became icons of the counterculture and anti-war movements.
