Clean Sweep 2025 -- can we make the group photo even bigger???
Clean Sweep will be here before you know it, and Wednesday is your last chance to register online! That registration gives you the option of picking the park or location to volunteer at but don't worry -- you can still show up day of, and we'll get you assigned wherever the work is calling.
Clean Sweep is one of the best days of the year and its an amazing opportunity to get outside, meet your fellow neighbor, and take collective pride in your community!
I can't wait to see everyone next Saturday, April 18!
Speaking of Clean Sweep, April 22 is Earth Day in Auburn and April 24 is Arbor Day!
As we roll up our sleeves for Clean Sweep, it’s the perfect time to carry that momentum into two meaningful celebrations: Earth Day on April 22 and Arbor Day on April 24!
These observances are simple at their core because they remind us to take care of the place we call home. Whether it’s picking up litter, reducing waste, or planting something new, even small actions can have a lasting impact on our environment and our community.
Arbor Day, in particular, highlights the importance of trees in our daily lives. They provide shade, clean our air, support wildlife, and make our neighborhoods more beautiful and livable. Here in Auburn, we’ll mark the occasion with a ceremonial tree planting alongside community partners and volunteers who help steward our urban forest.
If you’re already participating in Clean Sweep, consider it just the beginning. This is a great opportunity to continue those efforts: plant a tree, spend time outdoors, or find a small way to give back to the environment!
While we all collectively wish the Seattle Mariners were playing better this spring, if you do plan on watching any of the games this season, there's no better place than Hawkers Bar & Grill! This amazing sports bar had its grand opening on Thursday, taking over what was previously Chaska Bar and Grill.
Hawkers has actually been open for several weeks and is owned by the same owners as Chaska, so you know the food is going to be delicious! Their menu has swapped from Indian to classic American pub food like burgers, wraps, sandwiches, wings, and so much more.
I hope to see you there one of these weekends, and let's go, Mariners!

(From left) Deputy Mayor Tracy Taylor, Congresswoman Kim Schrier and me!
Prior to our Monday evening council meeting, I had the honor of moderating Congresswoman Kim Schrier’s (WA-08) Town Hall at the Postmark Center for the Arts. Thank you to Deputy Mayor Tracy Taylor for attending with me!
Roughly 100 constituents showed up from all parts of her district. Congresswoman Schrier has shown why she continues to be re-elected in that role. We received questions on a variety of issues, including the conflict in Iran, AI policy, and affordability.
As you'd expect, Congresswoman Schrier is incredibly knowledgeable on all issues happening at the federal level of government, which makes me know that Auburn's voice is being heard in D.C.. She continues to work across the aisle to ensure everyone works together.
Thank you, Congresswoman Schrier, for choosing Auburn to host your town hall and for you do for us in Washington D.C.!
Hundreds of Auburn-ites descended upon parks across the city last weekend to search for the elusive Peter Cotton Tail -- and the best part? So many of them shared photos from their adventures!
As you can see, the weather was just about perfect. I can't recall a Peter Cotton Trail weekend ever being this warm and sunny. Did you or your family take advantage of our good fortune? If not, there's always next year!
Congratulations to all of our winners who walked away with gift cards, gift baskets, free tickets and certificates, and so much more. And if you didn't win, don't let that stop you! I have a feeling Mr. Cotton Tail will be out and about next spring.
Tuesday is National Sikh Day and April is National Sikh History Month, a time to recognize the holiest Sikh holiday Vaisakhi, one of the most religiously significant days in Sikh history. It commemorates the creation of the Khalsa, a fellowship of devout Sikhs.
Sikhism is the fifth-largest world religion with approximately 30 million Sikhs worldwide, including over 1 million in the United States. The City of Auburn recognizes the diversity of our community and afford all residents the opportunity to better understand, recognize and appreciate the rich history and shared experiences within.
From the City of Auburn to you, have a joyous Vaisakhi filled with celebration!
Thank you Councilmember Hanan Amer for accepting the proclamation on Monday!
April marks National Arab American Heritage Month, a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the rich history, culture, and contributions of Arab Americans in our community and across the country.
From small businesses and public service to science, education, and the arts, Arab Americans have helped shape the fabric of American life in countless ways. Their stories, traditions, and perspectives add depth and vibrancy to the communities we call home.
This month is also a chance to recognize the values that unite us -- respect, opportunity, and a shared commitment to building a welcoming place for all. In Auburn, we’re proud to be part of a diverse community where different cultures are not only respected but also celebrated.
I encourage everyone to take time this month to learn more, engage with one another, and appreciate the many ways Arab American heritage continues to enrich our city.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a reminder that building a safer, more respectful community takes all of us -- every day, in ways both big and small.
Prevention starts with awareness, but it doesn’t stop there. It’s about how we show up for one another: listening without judgment, speaking up when something doesn’t feel right, and helping create environments where everyone feels safe and valued. When we challenge harmful behaviors and support those who have experienced harm, we strengthen our entire community.
Let’s continue working together to foster a culture of respect and accountability here in Auburn and across the Puget Sound.

Next week, we recognize National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, a time to honor the dedicated professionals behind every 911 call who help keep our community safe.
Emergencies can happen at any moment, and while police officers, firefighters, and EMS providers are often the most visible responders, it all begins with the calm, steady voice on the other end of the line. Here in Auburn, that critical first connection is made through Valley Com 911. Each year, their highly trained public safety telecommunicators handle more than 600,000 calls, guiding people through some of the most stressful moments of their lives.
These individuals are true first responders. They provide life-saving instructions, coordinate emergency services, and support both the public and field responders with professionalism, precision, and care -- all while working in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
I’m proud to officially proclaim April 12–18 as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in the City of Auburn. Please join me in thanking these essential team members whose behind-the-scenes work makes a visible difference in the safety and well-being of our community every day.
Thank you Vonnie Mayer, the Executive Director of Valley Com 911, for coming to Monday's council meeting to accept the proclamation in person! If you'd like to learn more about Vonnie and the work she and Valley Com do each and every day, you can listen to our That's So Auburn! podcast featuring Vonnie.
As promised, National Night Out registration is open! You can now sign up for a neighborhood event and invite one of our staff to attend.
National Night Out is one of my favorite summer events. And that's because our city staff, police, and elected officials will come to your community and neighborhoods, ready to chat, mingle, and discuss the city we live in -- what we're doing to make it better and how we can all work together to achieve that goal.
It's a fantastic opportunity not only to meet and talk with us, but also with your neighbors! How many of you know your neighbors on even a first-name basis? Well, now's your chance!
Register online on our city website -- our city staff will be in touch in the coming weeks and months on next steps! Including banners and materials for your neighborhood event and even your very own National Night Out shirt!

Auburn is rich with history — from historical Main Street to the artifacts preserved throughout White River Valley Museum — I am excited to share these stories with all of you each week.
(Image courtesy of White River Valley Museum)
Messiah Lutheran Church was established in Auburn in 1924. Originally located on the corner of 3rd Street NE and E Street NE, the church found itself conveniently close to the local high school when the “new high school” was built in 1927. Even after building a new sanctuary and moving locations to the corner of 4th Street NE and H Street NE, the church continued to be a site associated with the high school and was regularly a host for school Christmas services and baccalaureate services honoring graduating seniors. Messiah’s original building with its iconic windows and castle-like tower still stands, and today is home to Auburn Missionary Baptist Church.
