“The tornado the alarms had screamed about ... hadn't actually happened, but around here you never know. Better safe in the cellar than sorry halfway up the sky.”

If you've been paying attention to the news lately, you've probably seen reports about earthquakes in Russia and Alaska that have affected us all the way down here in the Puget Sound. You've probably also seen reports about tremors in Mt. Rainier -- but don't worry! All is well in in our seismic world.
The timing couldn't be better, though, because this week we sat down with our newly hired Emergency Manager Matthew Colpitts and our Emergency Management Coordinator Tyler Turner to talk emergency preparedness in Auburn!
We get into the nitty gritty of Emergency Management -- why it's important, why it's necessary during times of crisis, and all of the planning and preparation necessary to ensure that when (not if) things do go south, we're confident and ready.
Give the episode a listen at any of the links below, and make sure to subscribe! Our next episode in September will featured Valley Regional Fire Authority Chief Brad Thompson!

We had a great time rocking the block this past Friday at Party in the Plaza! Thank you everyone who came down to the plaza and enjoyed the amazing live music from Herding Cats, delighted in a drink or two at our two beer gardens, or snacked on some delicious food from our incredible line up of food trucks! I had a great time chatting with many of you and I loved the smiles, laughter and fun!
Our final Party on the Plaza is Friday, Aug. 22, so mark your calendars and we'll see you downtown for Cheeseburgers in Paradise!

We need your help to make the Auburn Farmers Market #1 in Washington State -- again!
The American Farmland Trust’s Farmers Market Celebration began today, Friday, Aug. 1, and with your vote, we can bring the title home for 2025. Auburn proudly held the top spot in 2022, and we’re ready to take it back!
✅ Vote here: https://markets.farmland.org
It only takes a minute, but your support makes a big difference for our market, our farmers, and our community.
Let’s show everyone the power of Auburn -- vote today and spread the word!
If you’ve ever wondered how our city works, how decisions are made, or how you can get more involved, this is your chance. The 2025 Auburn Civics Academy kicks off this September, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how our local government operates. And yes -- City of Auburn employees are welcome to apply, too!
This free, 9-week course runs from September through November with evening sessions and three Saturday gatherings. You’ll learn directly from city staff, tour facilities, and connect with fellow Auburn residents who share your interest in building a stronger community. Dinner or snacks are provided at every session, and financial assistance (including childcare and transportation help) is available to remove barriers to participation.
If you’re a resident, business owner, student (16+), or someone who simply cares about our city’s future, this is a great way to deepen your civic knowledge and get inspired to engage!
Learn more and apply at Auburn’s Civics Academy page, or reach out to Keisha Taylor.

The weather was perfect on Saturday as we danced the Bon Odori at the White River Buddhist Temple!
The Bon Odori Festival is a beautiful Japanese tradition that brings people together to honor and remember loved ones who have passed. But more than that, it’s a celebration of life, filled with music, dance, community, and culture.

Thank you to everyone who had a hand in putting this annual event together, and as always, for the invite to the festivities!
It's an event I look forward to every year I can't wait for next year's dance!
National Night Out is this Tuesday, which means departments across our city -- most notably, our Police Department -- are preparing for a citywide block party! We have over 50 City of Auburn volunteers and area partners like the Valley Regional Fire Authority and Washington State Patrol ready to venture out to your neighborhood events!
This is one of the most important days of the year for Auburn, because it means we get to meet face to face and receive honest, valuable feedback on how we're doing. If you see one of us out and about, please say hello! You should be able to find us easily, either because we're dressed like police officers, or because we're wearing a bright blue shirt that says National Night Out on it!
If you're organizing an event and have any questions or comments, please email us and we'll get back to you as quickly as possible.
See ya Tuesday!
Don't have a local event or live downtown? Meet us in the Plaza!

Big Apples, Big Business: How Washington Became the Apple State
Why do so many apples in the grocery store look the same? And why do so many come from Washington?
In this talk, explore how Washington became the top apple producing state in the country, and how, in the process, it transformed apples into an industrialized commodity. Many regions in the West attempted to grow apples, but in Washington, big apples became big business thanks to the work of scientists, investors, irrigators, railroad corporations, marketers, and apple growers. How does the history of Washington apples reflect larger changes happening in the American food system—changes that continue to affect our environment and the way we eat today?

Seattle at dusk from Elliott Bay, snapped last Saturday by our Comms Manager.
Auburn is rich with history — from historical Main Street to the artifacts preserved throughout White River Valley Museum — I am excited to share these stories with all of you each week.
(Image courtesy of White River Valley Museum)
Dick Portway and others in front of Portway General Store in Slaughter, c. 1886. This store was the first commercial building in Slaughter, and was located where City Hall stands today. The false front style of this building was very common in the American West in the late 1800s because it was a cheap and fast way to use lumber to achieve the effect of a fancier masonry two-story building when first setting up a business. Most western towns grew out of having false front buildings when the business owners either replaced the buildings with a real two-story building, or fires destroyed the all-wood buildings.
