NHRA Northwest Nationals begins this weekend!
The roar is back! The 36th annual NHRA Northwest Nationals are underway at Pacific Raceways, and it’s going to be a weekend to remember.
Whether you’ve been attending for decades or are just discovering the thrill of 300+ mph drag racing, there’s something truly electric about this event. Friday night’s “Qualifying Under the Lights” returns again this year and it was nothing short of spectacular in 2024. Pair that with the iconic Cacklefest, live music, great food, and the energy of thousands of fans, and you've got an unforgettable night ahead.
I’ll be there and I hope to see you, too!
Saturday is packed with action: qualifying rounds for pro stockers, funny cars, top fuel dragsters, plus autograph sessions, food vendors, and more. Then on Sunday, the excitement builds as elimination rounds determine the champions. We'll kick things off that morning with the Track Walk and Pre-Race Ceremonies -- always one of my favorite moments.
We’re wishing all drivers and teams a safe, thrilling weekend of racing!
📅 July 18 - 20 ⏰ All day 📍 Pacific Raceways, 31001 144th Ave SE, Kent, Wash. 💲 Tickets
Welcoming racing royalty to Auburn
What a thrill to help kick off race weekend right here in Auburn at the Muckleshoot Casino Resort! I had the pleasure of joining four incredible NHRA drivers for the official press conference as they geared up for the Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways.
We welcomed:
-
Antron Brown, the reigning Top Fuel world champ, with four titles and 81 career wins. He’s already taken a win this season and will be chasing his fifth in Seattle.
-
Ron Capps, a three-time Funny Car world champion, who got his very first NHRA win right here in Seattle back in 1995. He’s currently sitting third in the standings and is always a fan favorite.
-
Dallas Glenn, a standout Pro Stock driver -- and a Seattle-area native! He grew up racing at Pacific Raceways and is coming in hot with three wins this season and second place in the points.
-
Shawn Reed, another Pacific Northwest local, driving the Reed Trucking & Excavating Top Fuel Dragster. He’s chasing his first Top Fuel win, and I know the home crowd will be cheering him on.
After the press conference, fans stuck around for a free $15,000 Mission Foods Machine Tournament featuring both Ron Capps and Shawn Reed. It was a blast to watch the competition heat up before the engines even started!
Thank you to NHRA and the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe for hosting such a fantastic kickoff event -- and for continuing to make Auburn a destination for world-class racing.
Thinking about racing? Start here
Have you ever wanted to test your own car on a drag strip—but safely and legally? The NHRA’s Street Legal program is the perfect way to get started. For just $65, you can earn your NHRA License and see what your car can do on a real track, not the street. From daily drivers to souped-up hot rods, there's a place for everyone.
New for 2025: More ways to experience the action
The Finish Line Club – Relax pit-side at the 1,000-foot mark, enjoy lunch, drinks, and premium views. Sponsored by Explore Auburn! ($75 upgrade)
The Launch Club – 35 feet from the dragstrip. Feel the power, grab a bite, and enjoy private amenities. ($100 upgrade)
The 1320 Bar – A brand-new, 21+ area near the spectator gate. Drinks, yard games, and a front-row view of the finish line. ($60 at the gate, $50 in advance)
Hospitality upgrades are limited and going fast—visit nhra.com or contact the track directly to grab yours.
Let’s make some noise, Auburn, and I'll see you at the track!
Join us in the heart of downtown next Friday for Party on the Plaza's Rock the Block -- a free event filled with live music, delicious food trucks, a beer and wine garden, and the perfect community vibe.

See you on the plaza!
📅 Friday, July 25 ⏰ 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. 📍 City Hall Plaza | 25 W. Main Street
We had a great time at the Auburn Municipal Airport Saturday for Auburn Airport Days! Over 200 kids got to fly high around Auburn and the White River Valley -- for free, might I add -- as part of the Young Eagles Flights Club.
I loved seeing all of the families come out to see all of what our airport has to offer, including a series of new murals painted alongside the runway.
We're already looking forward to next year!
One of our beloved members of Team Auburn passed away earlier this year and this Saturday is her celebration of life. I wanted to take a moment to share a few photos of Tracy alongside the obituary written in her honor.
Tracy was a valuable member of our Auburn Police Department team and the city as a whole, and there are so many people who will miss and remember her each and every day.
Tracy, if you're able to read this from somewhere, just know you were loved and we're so glad we had the pleasure of knowing you.
With Heavy Hearts, We Share the Passing of One of Our Own
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of an integral member of the Auburn Police family after a courageous 10-month battle with Platinum Resistant Ovarian Cancer.
Tracey Carter, who served as a Police Records Supervisor since 2018 for our department and community with unwavering dedication, strength, and compassion, was more than a colleague – she was family. Her commitment to service, her kindness, and her resilience touched everyone who had the privilege of working alongside her.
Her legacy will continue to inspire us, and her absence leaves a deep void in our hearts and within our department. Tracey was preceded in death by her son, Tommy Carter. She leaves behind sons, Travis and Tyler Carter. As well as her beloved dogs Monte, Leo, Frankie, and Biscuit. We extend our deepest condolences to her loved ones.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Tracey this Saturday at The Auburn Veteran’s Memorial Park (building) beginning at 6 pm. Casual attire or wear your favorite sports team. Tracey loved sports and spending time at the beach in Oregon.
Rest in peace, Tracey. You will never be forgotten.

Auburn’s Civics Academy is returning for Fall 2025! Register for the opportunity to be a part of the 2025 sessions happening September – November!
And if you're wondering -- yes, it IS open to City of Auburn employees!
What is it?
The 2025 Auburn Civics Academy is a 9-week course held one/two evening(s) a week from 6 - 8:30 p.m. beginning Thursday, September 4, 2025 with three Saturday sessions on September 6, September 20, and September 7 from 9 a.m. - noon. Classes are held in multiple locations in Auburn, and a meal and/or snacks is provided at each session. Attendees must be willing to commit to attendance of sessions (can miss THREE sessions and still graduate).
Who can apply?
- Anyone who is an Auburn resident, business owner/employee, in school (16-years and older), has a general interest in Auburn, and not running or currently serving in a political office. Priority will be given to Auburn residents.
- Participants must be willing to commit to the attendance of all sessions (you can miss two and still graduate).
What financial assistance is offered?
One of the ways we’re addressing equity within Neighborhood Programs is to reduce barriers that would stop community members from participating in events. The City of Auburn offers financial assistance (child / adult care vouchers, transportation assistance) to remove those barriers. This also includes food, as we provide a dinner every week before starting the class. For community members interested, there's a question on the first page of the application and after it's selected we will connect and get that process rolling.
What are the objectives of this Academy?
- To involve and engage residents and businesses in learning about and understanding the operation of city government, and to improve communications between the City and those who live and work here.
- To provide insight into how decisions are made, how City funds are allocated, and how City departments operate.
- To empower and encourage a larger number of residents and business owners to become more civically engaged in the future decisions affecting Auburn's quality of life.
For more info: Visit Auburn’s Civics Academy Page or connect with Keisha Taylor, ktaylor@auburnwa.gov, 253-285-7012.

Mt. Rainier was out and proud at Auburn Airport Day!
Auburn is rich with history — from historical Main Street to the artifacts preserved throughout White River Valley Museum — I am excited to share these stories with all of you each week.
(Image courtesy of White River Valley Museum)
Watermelon has been cultivated in warm regions of Asia and Africa for thousands of years, only arriving in North America in the 1500s with invading Spanish colonists. Tom Iseri of Auburn is seen here enjoying watermelon at a picnic c. 1940 – a watermelon that was most likely grown in Washington state. While Washington has never been a major producer of melons for national consumption, in 1940 roughly 220,000 watermelons were grown here, mostly for sale in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
