“Stay afraid, but do it anyway. What's important is the action. You don’t have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow.”

The Auburn City Council has selected Lisa Stirgus to serve in Council Position 6, a vacancy that opened after former Councilmember Larry Brown resigned earlier this year.
Lisa was appointed during Monday’s Special City Council Meeting, where she was interviewed alongside five other incredibly qualified candidates.
Originally from Reno, Nevada, Lisa moved to Washington in 2013 with her husband, Richard, on the day their daughter started college at the University of Nevada, Reno. They often say they left Reno so their daughter could “go away” to college. In 2018, they planted roots in Auburn. They chose the location because of its convenience to Tacoma and Seattle, but Auburn quickly became home.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with an emphasis on Human Motivation and Performance. She serves on the Green River College Foundation Board and the King County Children and Youth Advisory Board, where she co-chairs the Youth Justice Subcommittee. With her recent appointment, she will be exiting her seat on the Auburn Independent Salary Commission. Her public service is grounded in listening first, leading with empathy, and showing up with heart.
I don't envy our City Council, who had the difficult task of selecting just one person out of a group of amazingly talented candidates.
Councilmember-Elect Stirgus brings with her decades of experience in transformational leadership, youth development and education, and financial empowerment, and I know she’ll represent our residents with pride and care!
Welcome to City Hall!
Join us for the swearing-in ceremony this Monday
Join us on Monday, April 21 at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall for a special swearing-in ceremony as Lisa officially takes her seat on the Auburn City Council. We’ll have light refreshments and great company as we celebrate this exciting new chapter.
📅 Monday, April 21, 2025 🕠 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. 📍 Auburn City Hall Council Chambers | 25 W. Main Street
Please join us outside the lower level of Postmark Center for the Arts on Saturday, April 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. for an opening celebration of our new art studios! The building is Auburn's 1937 historic Post Office that has been renovated into a vibrant arts and culture space and rental venue in downtown Auburn.
Come out and celebrate with the funders, project partners, myself and council members, artists, City of Auburn staff, and the entire community! The celebration will feature a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by an open house with artists providing demonstrations and art activities.
These new art studios will be a gathering space for printmakers, jewelers, glass artists, and the community to participate in classes and studio hours. We are happy to finally open this incredible, new space to the community!
📅 Saturday, April 19 ⏰ 1 - 4 p.m. 📍 Postmark Center for the Arts | 20 Auburn. Ave.
You can't maintain your status as Tree City USA for 22 years without planting a few more! For this Arbor Day, which is next Friday, we decided to plant a Tompkins King Apple Tree at Mary Olson Farm, a spot that has a long tradition of apple growing over the decades.
Trees are more than just beautiful -- they clean our air, cool our neighborhoods, and provide critical habitat for wildlife. They give us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and wherever they are planted comes with it a resource of joy, beauty and spiritual renewal.
Our parks and green spaces are essential -- not just for recreation, but for public health, for community connection, and for building a city that we’re proud to pass on to the next generation.
In short, trees are a big part of what makes Auburn feel like Auburn.
Speaking of trees, Clean Sweep will be here before you know it, and Wednesday is your last chance to register online! That registration gives you the option of picking the park or location to volunteer at but don't worry -- you can still show up day of, and we'll get you assigned where the work is calling!
Clean Sweep is one of the best days of the year and its an amazing opportunity to get outside, meet your fellow neighbor, and take collective pride in your community!
I can't wait to see everyone next Saturday, April 26!
I'm so excited to welcome Stephanie Cox and the Children's Dance Theater to Main Street in a completely renovated space previously occupied by Sylvan Learning.
Stephanie and her team have done a wonderful job completely renewing the space and turning it into something uniquely their own.
Our team was lucky enough to get an inside look at the new theater while it was under construction just a few short months ago for State of the City. You can watch that segment via the button below -- I love seeing Stephanie's infectious smile and positive attitude when talking about the future of the theater.
The kids are going to love it, Stephanie!
Wednesday night, I had the absolute pleasure of joining Circle Creek Therapy for the ribbon cutting at their beautiful new space on Auburn Way North -- and wow, what a journey they’ve been on! What started as a one-woman dream in 2015 has grown into a 19,000 square foot clinic with more than 40 dedicated team members, offering everything from speech, occupational, and physical therapy to behavioral health and counseling. And it’s all delivered with heart.
Founder Courtni Doherty shared her story -- and let me tell you, it’s a powerful one. This isn’t just a business; it’s a calling. From driving to kids’ homes after school to now serving families across our region in a space built for growth, support, and healing -- Circle Creek Therapy is making a huge difference in people’s lives.
Congratulations again to Courtni, her family, and the entire team. Auburn is lucky to have you here, and I’m so excited to see what the future holds!

Great things from small beginnings, right?
Auburn is rich with history — from historical Main Street to the artifacts preserved throughout White River Valley Museum — I am excited to share these stories with all of you each week.
(Image courtesy of White River Valley Museum)
The sailor dress, also called the Peter Thomson dress or the middy dress, was a popular style of dress for girls and young women in the early 20th century, as seen on many of the girls in Auburn High School’s class of 1920. The style was associated with modernity and physical activity, and was used for athletic uniforms for women in a variety of sports. Queer and other culturally non-conforming women used the popularity of the sailor style to push gender norms in fashion, including wearing pleated trousers to public events or hiking up Mount Rainier in divided skirts and a middy blouse.
