We showed support Friday afternoon by making this giant W in front of City Hall. And we'll be sure to rep purple at City Hall on Monday! Will you join us?
Councilmembers Tracy Taylor and Hanan Amer, and Mayor Nancy Backus
On Tuesday before our regularly scheduled council meeting, Council Chambers was packed and standing room only as we welcomed our four newly elected city councilmembers, Hanan Amer, Cheryl Rakes, Clinton Taylor and Tracy Taylor!
Councilmember Clinton Taylor
Councilmember Rakes, who has been on the council for almost a year after filling a vacancy, wasn't able to attend due to illness. We made sure to celebrate her even in her absence and also welcome in our incoming class of councilmembers in style and with spirit.
The role of an elected official is not easy, and there’s much to learn to be effective. That's why beginning Jan. 16, we have over a dozen special city council meetings scheduled that will give our new members information and training related to the operations and day-to-day functions of various city departments.
The anticipated schedule (subject to change) and content for these special meetings can be found here.
I’m excited to work with all your councilmembers, and hope that you will engage with them whenever you get the chance!
On Wednesday, Councilmembers Kate Baldwin, Hanan Amer, city staff, myself and dozens of area business members welcomed White Willow Co. to Auburn!
The business is in the Arcade off Main Street at 222 E. Main St #D, and it's lovely! Owner Carol Blomgren, who's been a business owner for over 30 years, has stocked her store with wonderful home decor -- new and repurposed -- fresh flowers, gifts, and more.
Come visit downtown Auburn and swing by!
Also during Tuesday's City Council meeting, the Auburn Police Department promoted Officer Jason Schultz to the rank of Sergeant!
Sergeant Jason Schultz began his career with the Auburn Police Department on March 19, 2012. Before joining APD, Jason worked in Special Education in public schools. During his time with the department, Jason has served in both the patrol division and as a detective in the Special Investigation Unit.
Jason has also served as a Field Training Officer, Taser Instructor, Fitness Team Coach, and a member of the Peer Support Team. Jason is also a department ABLE instructor, who teaches officers how to successfully intervene to prevent harm, prevent misconduct, and promote officer health and well-being.
A big congrats to Sgt. Schultz for his continued hard work and dedication to the Auburn Community.
Mayor Nancy Backus, Consul General Iyori Makoto, Consulate-General of Japan Hiro Tojo and Sister City Liaison Tamie Bothell
Consul General Makoto Iyori and Senior Assistant for Political Affairs Hiro Tojo came to Auburn City Hall Friday afternoon for a visit, as Makoto had just arrived in Seattle late last year.
We talked about Auburn, Puget Sound, businesses in the region, and the many ways the Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle can help Japanese Americans connect with their community! There may have been a bit of football talk, too! Our parting words were “Go Dawgs!”

It was great to see Council Chamber so full of smiles and warmth Tuesday as we welcomed our new councilmembers. I hope to see chambers as full during regular council meeting as well!
