I hope you can join us Saturday as we dedicate the Postmark Center for the Arts, located at 20 Auburn Ave. The building is Auburn's 1937 historic Post Office that has been renovated into a vibrant arts and culture space and rental venue in downtown Auburn.
Come out and celebrate with us - funders, project partners, elected officials, artists, and the entire community. The celebration will feature a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony, building tours, and a small-scale art festival along Auburn Avenue.
It is such an exciting moment to see the dream of this cultural arts center finally becoming a reality after so many years. This center is much more than a remodeled building; it will be a place where the community can come together in appreciation of arts and to share cultural experiences that will strengthen our bond as a community.
A big thank you to all the city staff who have ushered this dream into a reality, and to the partners who made it possible. Thank you Johnston Architects, for planning the main floor renovations, and to American West Construction, who since December 2021, has been hard at work transforming the historic 1937 post office into the (pardon the pun) work of art it is today.
A special thank you to the Parks team as well: Allison Hyde, Thaniel Gouk, Mary Ellen Bowers and former employee Jamie Kelly -- none of this would have been possible without you!

Another September, another City of Auburn employee appreciation luncheon in the bag! Thank you to everyone who made it out and spent your lunch hour mingling with your fellow colleagues. I saw many of you sitting and talking with departments from across the City and that warmed my heart.
Thank you for making Team Auburn the BEST TEAM EVER!
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States between September 15 and October 15 to honor the history and culture of the over 62 million United States residents who are Hispanic and/or Latinx. Hispanic and Latinx folks have ties to cultures throughout the Western hemisphere (including Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico) and Spain.
September also includes many important independence day celebrations for countries in South and Central America, including Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua.
Hispanic and Latinx peoples have the longest history in Washington State of any non-Indigenous ethnic group. Mexican officers working on behalf of the Spanish colonial government sailed north from California and claimed the Pacific Northwest as early as 1775, and this legacy can be found today in place names like the San Juan Islands and Camano Island.
In Auburn, I had the privilege of attending the Mexican Independence Day festival and celebration at Les Gove Park, a wonderful and energetic event featuring hundreds of our Mexican American neighbors. There were mountains of delicious food, amazing music, and a handful of incredibly talented dancing horses. I'm already looking forward to next year!
Today I got to spend some time with our senior residents at the Auburn Senior Activity Center for a coffee hour (really, it was closer to two because the questions just kept coming!).
I'm always up for a good excuse to sit and chat with residents one-on-one or in a group -- the donuts and coffee were just a bonus! We discussed all sorts of things, like road projects, the new Sound Transit parking garage -- which will eventually sit kitty corner from the northwest side of City Hall -- and everything in-between.
The perfect pick-me-up before the weekend.

Barbara (Barb) Derda passed away on September 3 at the age of 81. Some of you may not have had the pleasure of knowing Barb, but she was a dear friend to this community. She absolutely loved being involved. For years she was a coach for her daughter Regina’s softball team, and she also delivered meals to homebound seniors with the Meals on Wheels program through the Auburn Senior Activity Center. I had the privilege of delivering with her on a couple of occasions, and she did so with compassion, care, and enthusiasm. She was awarded the distinction of Volunteer Emeritus in 2022 for her 19 years of dedicated service. If that wasn’t enough, Barb served on Auburn’s Human Services Commission for years. During her tenure, decisions were made on how to distribute funds the City received from Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the Community Development Block Grant funds as well as general fund dollars. She was dedicated to ensuring those precious dollars were spent in the most beneficial way possible. I will miss her dearly – her sense of humor, sense of community and her smile. Godspeed Barb.
