ART GALLERY EXHIBITIONS

Maggie Andersen

Art on Main Gallery
One Main Street

Artist: Maggie Andersen
Exhibition Dates:
April 12 - July 5, 2023

Maggie Andersen at Auburn’s Art on Main window-front gallery will be on view until July 5, 2023. As Andersen explains their work, "Clothing speaks a universal language that most people relate to. I am asking viewers to rethink the application of something so common. These life-sized wall sculptures suggest stories of exploration, survivorship and overcoming."

McGahan - One Mind

Artist: Deanne McGahan
Exhibition Dates: July 10 - October 21, 2023

The City of Auburn and the Auburn Arts Commission are pleased to present an upcoming art installation by Deanne McGahan, a Seattle-based artist creating works in the 3-dimensional realm. As response to creating an installation piece specific to the space, says McGahan, "I've always struggled with adding color into my work as I tend to find it distracting in 3D forms. My work is about moving forward, and through that, I've learned that I have to take more risks to make the world evolve, whether that's the society around us or the world as a whole. No color, no change. Creating art is how I navigate life and I hope the work that I can create can give that energy of Finding Color within anyone”

Marit Berg

Community Center Gallery
910 Ninth Street SE

Artist: Marit Berg
Exhibition Dates: May 2 - July 6, 2023

Artist Marit Berg is a printmaker with an incredible eye for detail, and she draws inspiration from patterns seen in nature. She writes about how her art “reflects on the intricate relationship humans have with the environment and with other animal species both past and present.” Her artwork is informed by contemporary views on ecology and “the wonders of myth and folklore.”

Hadiya FInley

Artists: Hadiya Finley and Jon Haaland
Exhibition Dates: July 7 – August 29, 2023

Artist Hadia Finley’s sculptures focus on the female figure and are meant as an expression of women’s feelings. Her artworks are crafted with “simplicity of form, softening of edges, joints and surfaces. Exaggerated form, altered relationships and integrated texture are used to show women as strong, powerful and tender beings who use their bodies as a means of expression.”

John Haaland considers his artwork an examination of “spaces away from people, either protected from or recovering from human endeavour.” The artist seeks to use his photography and mixed media work to document “the damage done, and the blight we leave behind, while illuminating the vast scapes held in small spaces, beautiful and unseen, sheltered from human hands.“

Fred Thumhart

Cheryl Sallee Gallery
808 9th St SE

Artist: Fred Thumhart
Exhibition Dates: May 2 - July 6, 2023

Fred Thumhart is a photographer who believes that “creativity is a fusion resulting from a collision between chaos and order, and that the special kind of creativity we call art is generated by a fearless, playful approach to the world that escapes the everyday conventions and results in a new and startling order.” His intriguing images range from “pure realism to abstraction, and surrealism” aiming to “show the viewer something she/he has never seen before.”

Joy Kloman - The Bathers

Artist:  Joy Kloman
Exhibition Dates: July 7 - August 29

Artist Joy Kloman references vintage black and white photographs, exploring themes both bittersweet and nostalgic. Says Kloman, "in my paintings, I have added color and a fluorescent underpainting, creating tension between past and present." Her colorful and painterly work "addresses and questions brief, heartening moments in time— delving into the joys, rites of passage and simple contentment, which cumulatively represent an epoch."
