Japanese beetles made their first appearances of the year in early June in Washington and are still emerging. Traps provide data for monitoring the pest’s spread as well as where Japanese beetle treatments may be needed. You can view 2025 beetle catches in the table below or in real time by visiting the online interactive map.

Residents near Japanese beetle catches are encouraged to prevent the spread of Japanese beetles by not moving items on which Japanese beetles can travel and spread. Soil, dirt or fill, including pots with soil, should not be moved off-site. Waste or debris from yards, gardens, and other horticulture activities should stay on-site or be taken to a Japanese beetle yard waste drop-off through October if you reside in a Japanese beetle quarantine area. Yard waste Saturday
The yard waste drop-off at 875 Bridgeview Road in Grandview will be open Saturday, August 23 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Share the event online.
The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) has been conducting an effort to prevent the spread of the destructive pest that invaded Cedar Mill in 2016. The 2025 Oregon Legislature failed to pass a bill (SB 576) that would have continued funding for the effort, leaving farmers, nursery owners, and gardeners to deal with the problem alone. Seasonal staff in central Washington were tasked with placing around 6,000 traps throughout the Lower Yakima Valley and into The Tri-Cities. This required staff to think outside of the box to achieve this high-density placement. They came up with some ingenious trap placement ideas, scouting out signs and roadside poles. The team’s creative solutions helped ensure excellent coverage for Japanese beetle detection.

Japanese beetle adults are seen in the summer. They:
- are about 1/3 – 1/2 inch long.
- have a metallic green head and thorax.
- have copper wing covers.
- have patches of white hair on the body—five on the side and two on the tip.
