Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Vermont

The Law Enforcement Torch Run kicked off last week and, over the course of several days, law enforcement officers, correctional officers, firefighters, rescue personnel, and military members carried the Special Olympics Flame of Hope mile by mile across the state and into Opening Ceremonies for the Special Olympic Summer Games held on June 6, 2025. Approximately 300 first responders from 55 departments participated in the run, championing the message of inclusion and showing their unwavering spirit of solidarity and support for Special Olympics programs statewide. Our “Guardians of the Flame” play a crucial role in fostering inclusive communities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Through shirt sales and sponsorships, the Torch Run raised over $15,000 for Special Olympics Vermont.
At the Summer Games, over 350 athletes from 12 different delegations competed in basketball and bocce. The athlete’s motto is “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Over the course of their competition, the athletes of Special Olympics Vermont showcased their talent and hard work. Congratulations to all!

South Burlington Police Station Upgrades to More Efficient Heating
After several years of costly maintenance and a lack of parts to service them, the boilers used for heating the Police Station building were recently replaced. The new boilers still use natural gas, but they are much more efficient than the previous units. While the City strives to phase out heating systems that run on fossil fuels, in this case, the introduction of a heat pump to the system was estimated to cost three times as much as the boilers. When the air conditioning equipment, which is also advanced in age, reaches the end of its life, the plan is to install a heat pump for both heating and cooling and use the new boilers as backup. City Hall has gas boilers as backup units, and the heating system for the Bartlett Bay upgrade is being designed in the same manner.

What to Do with a Found Needle
Tips from the Vermont Department of Health
- Put on heavy duty gloves and use pliers or tongs to place the needle in a thick plastic container like a laundry detergent bottle.
- Screw on the lid and seal it well with strong tape, like duct tape.
- Write “Do Not Recycle” on the container and throw it away in the regular trash.
If you are stuck by someone else’s needle:
- Wash the wound well with soap and water.
- Seek medical attention right away.
