Notice of Public Hearing June 2, 2025, 7:00 pm
The legal voters of the City of South Burlington are hereby notified and warned that a public hearing will be held at the South Burlington City Hall, 180 Market Street, South Burlington, Vermont on Monday, June 2, 2025 at 7:00 pm for a second reading and potential final passage of a proposed amendment to the City ordinance regulating heating systems and service water heating systems in new buildings (Chapter 38, Article VII Heating and Service Water Heating Systems).
The ordinance requires that all new buildings in the City of South Burlington utilize a renewable primary heating system and a renewable service water heating system. The objective is to achieve a high degree of conservation of energy and, where possible, reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. A two year exemption for service water heating in multi-unit residential, commercial and industrial new buildings included in the ordinance expired on February 14, 2025.
The proposed amendments to the ordinance:
- Update definitions to reference the applicable commercial and residential building energy standards (CBES and RBES).
- Establish a new two-year exemption period from the renewable service water heating system requirement for multi-family, commercial, and industrial new buildings that have a larger than 1 inch connection to the water meter. The exemption period expires on June 30, 2027.
A copy of the proposed ordinance is available at www.southburlingtonvt.gov or upon request at the City Clerk’s office, South Burlington City Hall, 180 Market Street, during regular office hours.

Accessibility at the South Burlington Public Library
Central to the mission of American libraries is that everyone should have the right to access books and library services. In practice, this means that libraries must be accessible and inclusive of people with a wide range of abilities. How is our own South Burlington Public Library pursuing these aims?
Opening its doors in 2021, the SB Library was designed and constructed with accessibility in mind. This includes standard elements such as disabled parking spots, curb cuts, automatic doors, an elevator, widely spaced furniture, and lower bookshelves for easy reach. Other building features include wiggly stools in the children’s area, a quiet reading room, a waterfall, headphones at all computers, and patron control of blinds, all of which allow patrons with sensory needs to control their environment.
Library Card Design Contest Coming Soon!
As part of the summer reading theme, Color our World, we'll be having a library card design contest! We'll choose winners in 4 age groups (5-8, 9-12, 13-18, 19+). Contest opens on June 16 and ends August 1; winners will be announced on August 15 and winning designs will go on cards starting in September - just in time for Library Card Signup Month!
