South Burlington's winter parking ban is in effect from December 1 to March 31 between midnight and 8:00 a.m. The parking ban is in effect regardless of weather conditions. Residents must plan for alternate parking if they normally park on a City street or right of way. Vehicles left on the street may be ticketed or towed. Please call dispatch at 802-846-4111 if your car has been towed.
The overnight parking ban on City streets helps our Public Works crew maintain operations and public safety throughout the winter. Please help our drivers by removing all obstacles from streets, including portable basketball hoops.
An aerial view of City Center
The multi-faceted story of how City Center has come to be was presented last month to the Northern New England Chapter of the American Planning Association’s annual conference in Stowe.
Five speakers spoke to different aspects of City Center, under the theme of how communities from around the region can apply these same principles to their own communities. Nick Atherton, South Burlington City Planner, spoke about the City’s state designation programs and how they have been used by the public and private sector to focus investment. Ilona Blanchard, South Burlington Community Development Director, then spoke about the City’s Tax Increment Finance District and the projects it has helped build—Market Street, City Hall/Library/Senior Center, City Center Park Phase I—and those it is slated to support in the coming years: Garden Street, City Center Park Phase II, and the I-89 Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge.
Ken Braverman of Snyder-Braverman Development spoke about the partnerships leveraged to finance and construct over 10 new buildings in City Center. Lisa Kingsburg from UVM’s Campus Planning Department spoke of being one of those partners and investing in housing. And Paul Conner, South Burlington Planning & Zoning Director, spoke about investments being made in the transportation system, from Dorset Street Signal hardware and technology, to shared use path construction, to bikeshare, to transit and transportation demand management.
Users of Williston Road may have seen a large construction site form just west of I-89 last month. The DoubleTree hotel is making a substantial investment on the site. They will be adding a new 4-story building – connected by a sky bridge to the main building – directly along Williston Road. The 70-room addition will be accompanied by a new plaza space just to the west of the building. Alongside this new construction project, the hotel will be removing an older section of the hotel that consisted of 58 rooms that the hotel owners described as undersized for the market. Construction is expected to conclude in the first part of 2026.
On November 19, South Burlington Fire Department's Engine 2 and Ambulance 2 responded to Shelburne for a structure fire that ultimately went to three alarms. E2 and A2 arrived first due and protected exposed structures while beginning to knock down the fire.
