From the 1970s to today, the idea of City Center—South Burlington’s own downtown—has been in the City’s adopted plans. Walk down Market Street today, and the vision outlined in the CityPlan 2024 of a “welcoming and walkable built environment, thriving neighborhoods, and a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented City Center” is taking shape all around us.
This summer, neighbors are moving into over 250 homes. New storefronts for restaurants and retail in the four Catamount Run buildings are still under construction. The 52,000 square feet in these spaces join the existing 27,000 square feet of occupied retail on Garden Street.
Since the TIF District was established to support City Center in 2012:
- $69,000,000 has been added to the tax base
- 8.96 acres of new park opened to public
- 22 electric vehicle public chargers are now in operation
Other projects in the works include a traffic signal at Hinesburg Road, a boardwalk trail connecting Market Street, Garden Street, and City Center Park, a continuous off-road shared use path along Williston Road between Staples Plaza and Hinesburg Road (this includes a bridge over I-89 and the reconfiguring of the intersection at the Al’s French Frys intersection).
But our new South Burlington downtown is not just the built environment. Recreation and Parks invites you to participate events held throughout the end of summer and into fall in City Center. Get to know old and new neighbors at Park Hop Brews with games, music, and brews in September, clear out your closets with the Community Yard Sale, or volunteer for Illuminate Vermont. Follow City Center’s progress and find upcoming events at www.southburlingtonvt.gov.

Public Hearing on Draft Zoning Regulation Amendments
The City Council last week received a series of proposed amendments to the City’s Land Development Regulations and have set a public hearing for Monday, September 16, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.
The amendments are grouped into three themes and ten amendments (LDR-24-01 through LDR-24-10). The themes are: Thriving Neighborhoods and Acts 47 & 181; Transportation; and Process Standards Improvements.
These amendments reflect the Commission’s work over the past 9 months (and more in some topic areas). They include changes to the LDRs to both align with the requirements and intent of Vermont Acts 47 and 181 and to advance several priorities of the 2024 City Plan within the housing, climate change, transportation realms and beyond.
The City’s LDR Amendment website includes a number of resources, including complete clean & redline versions of the draft amendments, a set of plain-language “spotlights” discussing each of the 10 proposed amendments, an interactive map showing zoning and overlay district changes, analysis data, and the adopted/draft water/sewer service area boundaries.
We invite you to review these resources – especially the plain language “spotlights” if this subject is new to you – and to provide feedback to the Council. Comments may be provided in writing to planning@southburlingtonvt.gov in advance of the 9/16 public hearing (and will be provided to all Councilors), or in person or via interactive video at the hearing itself. Meeting and login details are on the LDR amendments website.

Melo Grant has been a DJ in the Burlington community for 40 years. Her radio show, “The Cultural Bunker,” has been heard on WRUV 90.1 FM, UVM's public radio station, and WBTV 99.3 FM, the Media Factory's public radio station.
