The State of Vermont has updated its energy efficiency codes. Known as the RBES and CBEC (Residential/Commercial Building Energy Standards), these codes promote efficient designs for heating and electrical systems. The codes also guide product selection for building materials such as insulation, fixtures, and windows. It is mandatory that anyone designing a new building or a major remodel comply with RBES and/or CBES.

These amendments relate primarily to three themes: (1) Transportation, (2) Thriving Neighborhoods and Home Act of 2023/BE HOME Act of 2024 Compliance, and (3) Streamlining LDR Process and Standards, plus Minor and Technical Amendments. The Transportation amendments relate to standards for electric vehicle (EV) charging and for using Transportation Demand Management to regulate traffic generated. The Thriving Neighborhoods amendments bring the City's regulations into compliance with recent changes in State law primarily related to housing and also includes further edits designed to support our neighborhoods' vitality into the future. The Streamlining amendments edit the existing LDRs for clarity, predictability, and transparency.

Neighborhood to School Route
Coming August 2024, the City of Burlington, in partnership with Local Motion, will be doing a “pop-up” demonstration project that will create a safe and welcoming route from Mayfair Park neighborhood through to the Middle and High Schools to encourage more students to walk, bike or roll to school.
This “Neighborhood to School Route” is a pilot infrastructure project for the first 6 weeks of school in the Fall, using ‘quick-build’ tools and techniques which will include lawn signs, temporary chalk paint, planters and other items to create slow streets and awareness for people driving vehicles to expect students walking, biking and rolling in the area. This will not only allow for safety but also pleasantness, placemaking and neighborhood calming. Streets will still function as today, and parking will be minimally impacted (at gateway entrances to the greenway)
