Congresswoman Becca Balint presents a check for $700,000 to South Burlington staff in attendance. From left to right, City Manager Jessie Baker, City Council Chair Tim Barritt, Councilwoman Becca Balint, Director of Public Works Tom DiPietro, Water Quality Superintendent Bob Fischer, and Chief Operator Mike Fortin
This week, Congresswoman Becca Balint visited South Burlington’s Bartlett Bay Wastewater Treatment Facility. She was on site to learn about the current facility and present a $700,000 grant toward planned improvements. While the need for upgrades is primarily due to age-related deterioration, it gives us the opportunity to incorporate new energy-efficient technology into the facility.
Congresswoman Balint’s office said she “was proud to advance the City of South Burlington's Community Project Funding (CPF) application in the FY24 appropriations process. She values efforts to improve energy efficiency and was thrilled to see a $700,000 grant for your Energy Efficiency Improvements at the Bartlett Bay Wastewater Facility project signed into law as part of the FY24 Minibus Appropriations bill.”
While the treatment plant has done an excellent job treating wastewater, there is no denying that it takes a lot of energy to run all the pumps, blowers, UV lights, and other equipment required to make that happen. The design team is assessing the latest in heat pump technology to recover heat out of the treated wastewater that leaves the facility (effluent wastewater). The recovered heat is projected to be enough to heat all of the buildings at the facility without the need for fossil fuel-burning equipment.
Overall, the design of this facility will be more than just a wastewater plant refurbishment. With support from this grant, our project team is confident that the Bartlett Bay WWTF will be an industry leading example for green and energy efficient treatment of wastewater. Thank you, Congresswoman Balint, for your support in helping South Burlington achieve these goals.

This spring the City planted 44 new street trees along Nowland Farm Road and Midland Avenue. Based on a tree inventory conducted by the City Arborist, there are 512 ash trees in the City road right-of-way. Certain streets like Nowland Farm Road and Midland Avenue were planted primarily with green ash, rather than a diverse selection of tree species. In order to minimize impacts from the anticipated Emerald Ash Borer, the City has developed a plan that combines inter-planting and replacing the ash trees in order to increase the diversity of street tree species. Interplanting allows the new trees to get a head start before the existing ash trees are removed. This work was funded by the Vermont Urban & Community Forestry Program through the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation.

Summer Reading is for Everyone!
Summer Reading is for Everyone!
Adventure Begins at Your Library! Join us for reading challenges, in-house programs, and speakers who celebrate all the beauty and adventures that Vermont has to offer in the summer months.
We welcome participation by our youngest readers. Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers aged 0-4 can register for summer reading and pick up an early literacy activity packet. No raffle tickets for this age group, but stickers and an age-appropriate “goody bag” are take-home treats.
Readers in grades K-8 can earn raffle tickets for prizes by reading. Each 20 minutes of reading counts as one raffle ticket. Each raffle ticket can be entered in one of our eight prize buckets for a chance to win that prize, or if you don’t feel like waiting—choose a prize from the treasure chest with one raffle ticket! Students in grades 5–8 are also eligible for special prizes that include after-hours events at the library for you and five friends. Attendance at any library program also earns a raffle ticket. Prizes are on display in the Kidspace, and all prize winners will be drawn by August 12th. Winners must be registered. Register for summer reading in the Marabella Kidspace.
Teens and adults can participate in summer reading by earning raffle tickets for signing up, playing BINGO, and more! Stop at the desk on the second floor for more information about teen and adult summer reading.
Prizes for all ages are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library. The SB Library Foundation generously sponsored our summer reading bags. Please visit our website for more information about summer reading, summer programs and pop-up events in August. Keep an eye on our social media pages, too. Join us for an adventure-filled summer!
