Hello South Burlington,

As I watched the news from around the State pour in last week, I was thankful for South Burlington being on high ground and the millions of dollars the City and property owners have spent on stormwater mitigation projects over the past decade.  It made a difference, and we are fortunate.  Many of our neighbors across the State were less fortunate.  As I talk with my colleagues in other communities, they are thankful for the outpouring of kindness, volunteerism, and generosity we have seen as Vermonters, again, come together to take care of one another. 

Please know that your South Burlington team stepped up last week to help.  Once we were sure that our infrastructure was stable following the early week storms, we were able to dispatch staff and equipment to help. 

• On July 12^th and July 13^th Public Works staff Joe Gebo, Mike McCarthy, John Devlin, and Bill Morin traveled to Montpelier with our street sweepers to clean mud and debris from the public right of way.  
• Between July 12^th and July 14^th Bob Fischer and the Water Quality division provided the Montpelier wastewater treatment facility with about 60,000 gallons of activated sludge from the aeration tanks at our Airport Parkway wastewater treatment facility. This sludge (and the bacteria in it) helped “reseed” the Montpelier facility’s bacteria that was diluted as water flowed through the plant. 
• On July 13^th and July 15^th Greg Magnant, Pat Adams, Jamie Goddette, Willie Lebeau, Jason Morin, Dan Gregory, Christian Adamczak, and Tony Spillane helped truck flood deposited materials from streets and the DPW yard in Barre.
• On July 14^th Mike Ingalls and Jamie Goddette used the vactor truck to remove silt and water from flooded basements in Waterbury. While they were doing this Firefighter Stephen Demaio worked in Waterbury with a team from St. Johnsbury pumping out basements. 

Our Team appreciated the opportunity to help our neighbors and, by extension, I appreciate South Burlington’s support to serve others when we were able. 

In more local news, on Monday night the City Council adopted the FY24 Policy Priorities and Strategies.  This shared workplan between the City Council, City’s Leadership Team, and the appointed committees outline our shared work for the upcoming fiscal year.  With your support, we have a lot of exciting things going on as we plan for the future of South Burlington. You can review the Council and Leadership Team’s workplan here and the Committees’ workplans here.  We will provide regular updates to the City Council.

The South Burlington 2023/2024 Tax Bills were mailed on 7/15/2023 and should be arriving soon! 

The installment due dates are: 

1st Installment due by Tuesday, August 15, 2023

2^nd Installment due by Wednesday, November 15, 2023

3^rd Installment due by Friday, March 15, 2024

CityPlan First Draft: Seeking Feedback!

The first complete draft of CityPlan 2024 – the City's overall guiding plan for the coming decade – is out. The Planning Commission wants your feedback! Ways to get involved:

South Burlington Women In Business Gather at The Public Library

South Burlington Women in Business kicked off with a City Expo to a full house the last Thursday in June.  Women (and one guy) from around the region interested in or in business in South Burlington joined City Staff to talk about South Burlington and women-owned or operated businesses.  Organized by local businesswomen Julie Danaher (Ridgeline Real Estate) and Brittany Winfield (The Winfield Creative) with Ilona Blanchard (City of South Burlington) and Judy Luneau (SBBA) assisting, the event opened with serious networking.

Caterpillars to Butterflies!

Back on June 28th we shared the above caterpillar science project that started out as some pretty peonies in a vase in the Manager's office.  We had to share that the butterflies emerged on July 9th and 10th and according to Wikipedia, we were able to identify them as female Swallowtails!

Planners and engineers from South Burlington, Burlington, and UVM using the Library Community Room to collaborate on projects in the area.

Calling Teens!

For teens ages 13 - 18. Meet in the Teen Space on Monday, July 24 at 2:00 pm.

Help your neighbors in need by putting together Community Care Kits with back-to-school items, soap, toothpaste, feminine products, and other toiletries. All kits will be donated to COTS: Committee on Temporary Shelter.

Library Table at SB Nite Out!

SBPL staff will host a table at SB Nite Out on 7/27 and 8/24. Visit us at the library table and where we look forward to meeting members of the community while we promote eBike lending at the library and Back to School events for kids and teens.

Spanish for Kids

Ages 6 Months - 5 Years

Join us for Citas del Juego! Sing and play in Spanish with Lanie and her son Wesley! Just right for Spanish speakers and learners. No experience necessary. For ages 6 months to 5 years with an adult caregiver. No pre-registration necessary. Wednesdays, 10-10:30 am.

Get ready to kick off National Parks & Recreation Month by getting OUT and joining us for our 4th Annual SB Community Campout Event. Thousands of people across the nation will gather in their backyards, neighborhoods, communities and parks to take part in an annual event that provides a fun-filled evening for all generations to get outside and connect with nature. Set up camp, play family games, have a campfire to roast those marshmallows and enjoy a Movie in the Park! We'll not only tire the kids out, but the parents too!

Chittenden County Regional Partners Relaunch Eco-Friendly Bikeshare System

The Chittenden Area Transportation Management Association (aka CATMA) and Bird, a leader in environmentally friendly electric transportation, are teaming up to bring a shared electric assist bike system to the region. As part of a longstanding commitment to expand affordable, sustainable transportation choices, CATMA along with the cities of Burlington, South Burlington and Winooski, and its institutional partners at the University of Vermont (UVM), Champlain College and the UVM Medical Center, are thrilled to have the Bird bikeshare system in the community.
