Illuminate Vermont!

One block of Market Street will be CLOSED Thursday Dec 15 – Monday morning Dec 19.  Mary Street to the east end of the South Burlington Public Library and City Hall (east corner of 180 Market Street) will be closed.  Market Street will be open otherwise to local traffic.

Warm mittens wrapped around hot drinks, music on the main stage, and twinkling white lights set the scene on Market Street in South Burlington, Vermont. Stroll the open air market and dance by the main stage, or grab a cocktail and warm up inside. Vermont artisans will showcase perfect holiday gifts from culinary treats to handcrafted treasures.

Parking is readily available in the University Mall Parking Garage, with a shuttle service running between 4:00 – 8:15 PM to Market Street.  Parking is also available at the Rick Marcotte Central School with ADA parking and drop off directly behind 180 Market Street (along with 12 EV chargers).

Crosswalk Safety

Have you seen these new crosswalk signs around the City? 

Some have blinking lights and some do not. This is a reminder for both pedestrians and drivers of crosswalk safety.  These signs are popping up more often, and its up to all of us to stay safe.  Drivers need to pay attention to pedestrians waiting to cross and pedestrians need to wait for cars to come to a complete stop or they need to make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

Public Meeting

Join us on Wednesday December 14^th at 6:00 PM in-person or virtually to learn about 4 potential crosswalk locations and provide your input! We will be discussing the intersections of Dorset Street/Songbird Drive, Dorset Street/Nicklaus Circle, Hinesburg Road/Dubois Drive, and Spear Street/Pheasant Way. This meeting will be held as part of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee Meeting at City Hall on the 3^rd floor in Room 301.

Construction Begins at 112 Garden Street

Construction is scheduled to begin this week on a 4-story building at the west end of Garden Street. The building, located to the east of the Healthy Living parking lot, will contain 120 homes, a 5,000 s.f. child care facility, and a small retail space and will provide an attractive sitting area in the gateway to this part of City Center.

Ordinance Regulating Heat Sources for New Buildings Adopted

Last month the City Council adopted an Ordinance requiring that the primary heating for all new construction be from renewable or carbon-free sources. The Ordinance, which also regulates hot water in a phased-in-approach, will take effect for all new buildings applying for Building or Zoning permits beginning on February 15, 2023.

Car Theft Is On The Rise Nationwide

In 2020 more than 810,000 vehicles were stolen amounting to $7.4 billion in losses. Toss in larcenies from motor vehicles and the dollar figure only goes up. Let's do what we can to prevent our cars from disappearing while keeping some hard-earned money in our pockets. Check out the infographic for some tips from your friends at SBPD.

Winter Parking Ban

                 December 1 - April 1, 2023

Midnight to 8:00 AM every day. The ban is in effect, regardless of weather conditions. Tickets and or a tow could result from failure to comply.  To help our drivers, please remove all obstacles from streets, including portable basketball hoops.  Residents must plan for alternate parking from December 1 thru April 1 if they normally park on a city street or right of way.

Operation Fire Cuffs!

It’s the gift of giving time of year!  The South Burlington Fire Department will be participating in Operation Fire Cuffs 2022 and are collecting gifts to donate to the Vermont Children’s Hospital.  They will be collecting new unwrapped toys and gift cards now through December 20^th at Fire Station 1, located at 575 Dorset Street.  With your help, we can make this Holiday a special one!

WANTED - Sound Board Volunteer!

The South Burlington Public Library is seeking an interested and knowledgeable volunteer to assist in the set-up of our monthly concerts from January to April. The volunteer would assist the musicians in connecting to the audio system in the Auditorium, set up microphones, amps, and subs and troubleshoot as needed.

Holiday Lights Contest!

Registration Closes December 15th

The contest is free to enter and is open to residential homes in South Burlington only. SBRP staff will travel around the city and judge all entries based on two categories: Traditional and Merry & Bright. Our team will be out the evening of Monday, December 19th between 5 and 7 pm so show us your spirit! Though a small prize will be awarded for the winners of both categories, it’s the bragging rights and contributing to the wellness of the community that will be most rewarding.
