2026 Vaccine Storage and Handling Toolkit
CDC released its updated Vaccine Storage and Handling Toolkit, an essential resource for every facility that stores and offers vaccines. The toolkit provides clear, science-based guidance for vaccine storage, handling, and transportation. Consistent adherence to proper storage and handling practices is essential to ensure patient safety, prevent loss of vaccine, and ensure vaccines work as designed.
The 2026 toolkit edition includes new and refreshed resources; improved guidance on storage, monitoring, preparation, and transport; clearer alignment with Vaccines for Children (VFC) program requirements; and a revised addendum for Jynneos mpox (referred to by CDC as “monkeypox”) vaccine provided through the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS). Domestic Measles Outbreak
As of August 19, 2026 CDC reports 2,566 confirmed measles cases for 2026. So far, 45 states and DC have reported measles cases in 2026. Specific numbers from CDC and individual state websites differ slightly, as the frequency and timing of federal and state updates vary.
On August 19th, The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) announced the end of the 2026 measles outbreak in Buckingham and Cumberland Counties. The last confirmed outbreak-associated case was reported on June 29. VDH announces the end of this outbreak with cautious optimism. The risk of measles reintroduction remains high in the Commonwealth as measles cases continue to rise across the nation.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month
National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is here. This annual observance highlights the importance of protecting people of all ages against vaccine-preventable diseases through on-time vaccination. NIAM serves as a focal point for sharing credible information about the importance of staying up to date with routine immunizations. This year, Virginia also took action highlighting the importance of vaccination and strengthening immunization efforts across the Commonwealth. Through Joint Resolution 24, passed in 2026, Virginia's General Assembly designates August each year as Immunization Awareness Month in Virginia. Following the legislative resolution, Virginia Governor Spanberger issued a proclamation recognizing August 2026 as Immunization Awareness Month in Virginia.
The 2026 Immunization Champion Award winners have been announced! This prestigious award, hosted by AIM and funded by the CDC, recognizes individuals doing an exemplary job or going above and beyond to promote immunization in their state, city, or territory. This year, each of the 48 award winners was nominated and selected from a pool of health professionals, community advocates, and other immunization leaders for significantly contributing to public health in their community. Congratulations to Virginia's Immunization Champion, Louisa Johnson.
