Virginia Measles Outbreak Has Expanded
The Virginia Department of Health has announced that the 2026 measles outbreak in Buckingham County has expanded geographically to include Cumberland County. The outbreak in Buckingham County was first reported on May 13. The geographic expansion of this outbreak means that outbreak vaccination recommendations are also expanding to now include Cumberland County visitors and residents. The outbreak area is being expanded because VDH is seeing evidence of community transmission in Cumberland County. No specific public exposure locations have been identified at this time. However, during this ongoing outbreak, Cumberland County residents and visitors are at a higher risk of exposure to measles.
For updates on the outbreak, please visit the measles dashboard (updated at noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays). Additional information for healthcare providers can be found on the VDH measles website.
Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda
VDH continues to closely monitor the large and concerning Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. Travelers from affected areas are being monitored by public health. To date, no Ebola cases associated with this outbreak have been reported in the United States, and the risk to the general public remains low.
Healthcare facilities are encouraged to be aware of the process for evaluating patients with international travel and signs and symptoms of Ebola. Healthcare facilities and providers should review CDC’s “Think Ebola” factsheet and be prepared to assess and identify patients who have risk factors for Ebola disease.
Additional information and resources for healthcare professionals are available on the VDH Ebola website including the slides and recording from a Virginia Emergency Management Program webinar for hospitals on May 29, 2026.
Outbreak of NDM-Klebsiella pneumoniae with Hypervirulence Gene Markers in National Capital Region
VDH, the D.C. Department of Health, the Maryland Department of Health, and CDC have been investigating an outbreak of New Delhi Metallo-Beta-Lactamase (NDM)-producing hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae infections in the National Capital Region. As of June 23rd, 14 cases have been reported with one patient receiving care at a Virginia healthcare facility. VDH worked with the Virginia facility on public health containment measures and no additional Virginia cases have been identified to date. All Virginia healthcare facilities should remain vigilant to rapidly identify and stop the spread of these concerning multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) and continue to implement the following measures:
-
Forward carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales isolates to the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) and report cases and/or clusters of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales to your local health department.
-
Ensure the implementation of appropriate infection prevention and control practices.
-
Communicate MDRO status of patients/residents during all transfers so proper precautions are implemented.
